Stephon Tuitt gets his contract restructured

Stephon Tuitt Pittsburgh Steelers veteran defensive end had his contract restructured on Tuesday. There might be a couple of restructuring contracts being made in Pittsburgh to save some cap space. There are plenty of Steelers that need contract extensions but will have to wait due to the lack of cap space.

What are the new details of the Stephon Tuitt contract?

Basically, the Steelers are giving him more signing bonus money to lower the salary cap. In 2017, Stephon Tuitt signed a five year 60 million dollar contract and 13 million was a guaranteed signing bonus. In 2018 they put 2.7 million of his base salary plus 7.5 million in roster bonuses and converted it to signing bonus through the rest of the contract. That move saved 8.1 million in cap savings. This year they converted 5.195 million of his 6 million base pay and changed it into a signing bonus. This caused a cap savings of 3.9 million dollars to 2019.

Contract conversion is by Field Yates.

The reason for the dire need for cap space is because the Steelers are were well under the cap. With this move, the Steelers now is 5 million. The organization took a deep hit in the dead cap with the loss of wide receiver Antonio Brown. That was a dead cap of roughly 21 million dollars. This will hurt the 2020 cap projections. Next year the Steelers will be under the cap by 4 million dollars.

Contracts will soon be due for extension. Cameron Heyward will be a free agent in 2021. Alejandro Villanueva will end his contract in the same year. Let’s not forget star wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster will be a huge extension as he takes over for Antonio brown. More room has to be made in order to get key extensions made.

Juju Smith-Schuster will be waiting for a huge extension soon.

It will be very interesting who will be next on the cut list. Maybe there will be more restructuring.
