The Miami Marlins are obviously in a rebuild. Typically this means they have lots of young talent still developing like almost any team in a rebuild. Unfortunately that means big club slogs through some underwhelming performances. The team has amassed some very intriguing prospects in their short time in this rebuild so far. Once these players start to debut in the MLB they will be a team to watch out for. Let’s take a look at some of the Marlins pitching that they have in the minors.
The Top Marlins Pitching Prospects
The Marlins have many great arms developing in their system. One of them is top prospect Sixto Sanchez. He is currently playing in Double-A and is 8-4 with a measly 2.64 ERA in 99 innings. He also has 96 strikeouts. Sanchez is looked at as a pitcher who can become an ace level starter for the Marlins. His best asset is that his fastball command is stellar. That command has helped him keep his walks down to 19 across his 99 innings this year. He is polished enough that he may even arrive in Miami midway through next season.
Edward Cabrera is another great prospect to keep an eye on. He has made it up to Double-A this season where he is 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA in 34.2 innings and 37 strikeouts. With a little more seasoning, he could accompany Sanchez in a trip to Miami next year, especially if he can maintain the success he his having and keep his strikeout numbers up. His K/9 is 10.7 between both of his minor league stops and it definitely makes him an intriguing guy to watch. Cabrera is currently on the IL but being only 21 years old means there is plenty of time for him to round into form. He could become a mainstay in the rotation as a mid to end of rotation pitcher.
Underrated Pitcher
The Marlins pitching has a lot of underrated arms in their farm system. Zaquiel Puentes is a relief pitcher, but he can also start when needed. He has an abysmal 6.11 ERA this year with a 1-3 record and 25 strikeouts in 28 innings. However, Puentes has great stuff on the mound and that shows in his 8.0 K/9. His biggest issue is command. He owns an 8.0 BB/9, which leaves a whole lot to be desired. However, Puentes is just 18 so he has tons of time to figure that out and round into form to the the big league club.
This is a small look into the arms the Marlins have coming through the system. The team is in the early stages of their rebuild, and in time should become one of the top farm systems. When that happens there will be even more pitching prospects to talk about. The big club might not be exciting, but down on the Marlins farm there is a lot to be excited for.
