deGrom Continues to Dominate

deGrom managed to set a few milestones last night. He struck out his 200th batter for the 3rd consecutive season, and 4th in 5 years. No other Mets pitcher has reached the 200 strikeout mark in three consecutive seasons. With a solo home run to tie the game in the 6th inning, he became the first player in MLB history to record 13+ strikeouts and hit a home run twice in the same season. On April 3rd, he struck out 14 against the Miami Marlins and hit a solo shot.
Since 1893, only one pitcher has multiple games with 13+ K’s as a pitcher and a home run as a batter.

The 7 relief pitchers in the last 7 innings of the game recorded 13 more strikeouts. The record tying night was great for the pitching staff, but it came during a disappointing loss in extra innings. In the top of the 14th, Jeurys Familia gave up an RBI base hit to Billy Hamilton, and the Mets were unable to answer in the back half of the inning. The Mets look to rebound tonight against the NL East rival, Atlanta Braves. The playoff race is tightening up and the Mets need to win as many games as possible to stay in the hunt. Zack Wheeler takes the mound against Max Fried for the 7:10pm game at Citi Field tonight. The series wraps up on Sunday as Steven Matz faces Dallas Keuchel.
