The Browns Front Four are Coming

In Tampa last Friday, you saw the Browns front four ferociously attacking Jamies Winston the entire first half. Olivier Vernon sacked him first then Shelden Richardson, then Vernon again, and so on and so on. Myles Garrett was in on one series and didn’t join in the fun so imagine what this line is capable of with him playing full time. The starting four on this defensive line have the potential to be one of, if not the, best lines in the NFL. For all the love the offense is getting, let’s break down what we have in this defensive front.

Myles Garrett

If you don’t know how good this young man can become, then you must live under a rock. A healthy Myles ended 2018 with 13.5 sacks and a Probowl nod. He hasn’t even scratched the surface on his talent. With a rare combination of speed and power, it is near impossible to consistently stop him. Last season he was rated as the Browns best defensive player and also finished in the top 15 in the NFL in pass-rush grade. With a goal set at 20 sacks and the freedom to use his entire arsenal of moves, Garrett has a chance to move into the top five pass rushers in the NFL in 2019.

Larry Ogunjobi

Larry opened the year with a bang grabbing three sacks in the first two games. He would go on to have a strong first half of 2018 with four sacks, ten quarterback hits, and six tackles for loss. The problem is Ogunjobi was on the field for nearly 80% of the defensive snaps per pro-football-reference.com. Over the second half of the season, he was only able to muster a sack and a half, four quarterback hits, and four tackles for loss. A lack of depth on the interior of the defensive line took its toll on Ogunjobi. With the new additions to the Browns line, Ogunjobi should be fresh for the entire 2019 season. If the numbers through the first eight games of 2018 are any indication opposing offensive linemen are in trouble.

Sheldon Richardson

Richardson was given a three-year $36 million contract by John Dorsey early in the free-agent season clearly showing the importance placed on building up the defensive front. Richardson stormed out of the gate in 2018 with the Vikings with seven pressures in week one. As the year went on and the snaps racked up, he began to fade, much like Ogunjobi. The hope is that with last years starter Trevon Coley able to spell both of these players production will carry through the season. A healthy well-rested Richardson has shown he can be one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL.

Olivier Vernon

Olivier Vernon was Dorsey’s first move of the offseason. Dorsey chose to trade star right guard Kevin Zeitler to obtain one of the best rushers on the market. Vernon was a luxury for the rebuilding Giants and at a $15.5 million didn’t make sense. As part of the up and coming Browns, he has a chance to make an immediate impact in getting them to the playoffs. If healthy, nine missed games the last two seasons, Vernon will have one of the best years of his career opposite Myles Garrett. If the sack fest in Tampa Bay is any indication of what’s to come from Vernon and the rest of this front, they will be a force on gamedays

P.S. The Browns also have Genard Avery. As a rookie, he had 4.5 sacks, and 14 quarterback hits in a part-time pass-rushing role. The “walking muscle” will have a chance to expand on those numbers.

The Browns front four is coming and every quarterback they face in 2019 will feel it.
