NFL: Five Browns on the Roster Bubble

We head into the fourth and final preseason game tonight so let’s take a look at five Browns on the roster bubble. First off, keep in mind that the Browns will run a lot of two linebacker sets this year. How many do you keep? They also will need to plan for the future with Kareem Hunt. Finally, they are deep at receiver, so losing a potentially good one is possible if they already didn’t in Jaelen Strong. The 53-man is coming soon, so without further ado.

Derrick Willies, WR

Willies has continually shown flashes since joining the Browns last year. The reason he is on the bubble is the willingness of the Browns to bring in Buckeye alum Braxton Miller. This leads to some speculation on whether the front office is sold on Willies. With Strong cut and D.J. Montgomery on injured reserve, one spot is still open. Willies or Miller?

Offensive Line

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

No actual player name here is a huge concern this late in camp. Aside from the starting five and swing tackle Ken Lamm, do the Browns have a sure bet to make the team? You tell me. The best guess would be that Cornett and Forbes make it because the front office likes them, and Corbett’s second-round pedigree. Those guys usually get more string to hang themselves. At this point, it’s anybody’s guess who will be the reserves on this line.

Seth DeValve, TE

Surprise!! Not really. While this may be a small stretch, how much longer can the Brown wait on DeValve? At some point, availability has to trump potential, and he is pushing that to the brink. DeVlave needs to get on the field and make some plays tonight if he wants to stay in orange and brown.

Pharaoh Brown, TE

Tight end is looking like David Njoku, Demetrius Harris, and then figure it out. He is a massive athlete with some raw talent but continues to have metal errors and drop passes. If the Browns choose to keep Brown it would be purely based on the potential. He needs a big performance in tonight’s game against Detroit.

Anthony Zettel, DL

Zettel may go from great pickup off the waiver wire last preseason to gone the next one. We have not seen a whisper of the player that had six and a half sacks in 2017 since that waiver pickup. Zettle needs to have a big game tonight to hang onto a spot.
