AN INTRODUCTION
Around the league people know who Robby Anderson is and the talent he possesses as a deep threat. Jets fans constantly remind people around the NFL ecosystem that LeV’eon Bell is not the only offensive talent surrounding Sam Darnold. I tend to agree with this sentiment. After digging into the numbers, I have come to the conclusion that many are not aware of what Anderson is capable of producing.
AN OVERVIEW
Robby Anderson has put in two full seasons of work as the starting wide receiver. In 2017 he posted 941 yards and in 2018 he posted 752 yards. One may take a look at these numbers and instantly think to themselves that in year one he was close to that 1000 yard mark. In year two he showed regression and probably wouldn’t hit that 1000 yard wide receiver. Although, when you break down the numbers you see that is by no means the case.
THE NUMBERS
Robby Anderson, over the past two seasons, has played a combined 24 games in which his QB 1 was present from start to finish. In those 24 games Robby Anderson has gone for a combined 1,503 yards. If you divided that yard total by the number of games, you would see that Robby averages 62.625 yards per game with the QB1. If you took that average and multiplied it by 16 (total games in a season) you would reach a yard total of 1,002 yards. That would put Robby Anderson over the 1,000 yard three hold, but there is more.
THE SAM DARNOLD AFFECT
A large portion of last season Sam Darnold played like a rookie. Meaning he struggled. His timing was largely off, and it was clear that the game was moving too fast. Jump forward to week 14 against the Buffalo Bills. Some consider this game Darnold’s coming out party. In the second half of that game it all seemed to click.
In that game, Sam Darnold made a perfect throw to Robby Anderson down the sideline. I am sure plenty remember the scramble Darnold made from one side of the field to the other to find Robby Anderson for the touchdown. In that four game stretch Darnold was the highest performing QB in the league. Anderson was the obvious benefactor. In that four game stretch Anderson averaged 84 yards per game. Most believe Robby Anderson will continue this chemistry throughout this season and I am inclined to agree. 84 yards per game? You do the math, that’s 1,344 yards in a season.
