NFL Offseason or Soap Opera?

Is this an NFL Offseason or a soap opera on TV? Every offseason there are hold outs, for example, Le’Veon Bell season-long hiatus. There are players demanding trades and team drama. This season it seems that it’s more NFL drama than actual football being played.

These players are just a few that have made up this crazy offseason.

Jadeveon Clowney

This situation has been brewing for two seasons now. The Texans and Clowney have come to an impasse this season. With no extension before the deadline in July, the Texans placed the franchise tag on Clowney. This, of course, is not what Clowney wanted and he has refused to report and sign the offer.

With no resolution in sight, it seems a trade was inevitable. This situation finally has a resolution as Clowney was traded to the Seahawks for a 3rd pick and two linebackers.

With the season less than a week away the Texans had lost any leverage they had and by the return on Clowney other teams knew this as well.

Ezekiel Elliot

The drama continues in Dallas. Running back position importance has declined over the years. Gone are the days of 20 carries a game 3 down backs. There are exceptions Gurley (when healthy), Saquon Barkley, and of course Ezekiel Elliot.

Elliot a two-time All-Pro seems to have been around forever but he is in fact only 24. Last year Elliot ran for over 1400 yards and 6 TDS. Elliott is under contract through 2020, due to make $3.853 million this season and $9.09 million next season. This is where the problem comes in according to Josina Anderson "I was told that Yes, it is true that Ezekiel Elliott is willing to miss games and he will not play without a contract and that he told the Cowboys this back in January".

The comments by Jerry Jones did not help the situation.

“Zeke who"

I’ve earned the right to joke with Zeke," Jones said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. "Let me be real clear about that. I’ve earned the right to joke with Zeke."

The All-Pro back thinks he should be the highest-paid running back in the game and with over 300 carries last year 1400 yards he might just be right. Only one running back averaged over 20 carries a game last year and that was Elliot.

Melvin Gordon

There is more than just one running back who wants to get big money before the season starts. On July 13, 2019, Gordon told the Chargers that if he did not receive a new contract, he"d demand to be traded and skip training camp. His goal in staging a holdout was to make as much money as fellow running backs Todd Gurley, David Johnson, and Le"Veon Bell.

Coming into the last year of his contract Gordon stated “You [saw] what happened when (Ezekiel Elliott) was out. It was a completely different team," Gordon said. “You could replace average backs, yeah, and just plug them in. But you can"t just replace a great back.

The talent is undeniable Gordon is an elite runner and pass-catcher out of the backfield. The hesitation from the Chargers maybe from Gordon injury history and the emergence of Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson. It comes down to being a running back and knowing your shelf life is very short.

Trent Williams

There is probably not a more important position outside of running back than left tackle. That is why this situation is unique. Most teams under any circumstances want to lose their star tackle but here we are with the Redskins and Trent Williams.

NBC Sports Washington’s report continued:

Sources explained that the situation is not all about money, rather his contract status along with the series of allegations that the seven-time Pro Bowl tackle has lost faith in the team’s front office and medical staff. Still, money might be the only way to fix the holdout.

As stated above out all the situation that has been talked about this may be the one less likely resolved by the two sides. The seven-time pro bowler has been considered one of the best tackles in the league since being drafted. With only two years left on his contract, Williams is hoping for a contract extension but has also lost faith in the Redskin organization as a whole.

There have been multiple trade rumors surrounding Williams. It also seems that Washington is preparing for life without Williams.

The 2019-2020 offseason has begun like a network TV reality show. From holdouts to trade demands and helmet gate in Oakland, it has been nonstop drama. There may be up to 4-star level players that could be sitting out to start the year. Unlike reality TV there is no script and who knows how it will end. So I ask NFL offseason or Soap Opera?
