Why Jarret Stidham Won The Back-Up Role Over Brian Hoyer

Jarret Stidham had an amazing pre-season showing. This is why he won the backup role over a veteran quarterback, Brian Hoyer

Back Story

Jarret Stidham was drafted with the 133 pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Stidham came in competing for the third-string position with Danny Etling and Brian Hoyer. He exceeded expectations after having impressed during the preseason.

Pre Season Week 1

In week one against the Lions, Stidham and Hoyer were the only two quarterbacks to play. Hoyer threw for 147 yards, two touchdowns, and completed 12/14 of his passes. Stidham threw for 179 yards, one touchdown, and he completed 14/24 of his passes. Hoyer was the better quarterback this game, as he had a better completion percentage and averaged more yards per attempt. Stidham still played well, as he connected well with undrafted rookie receiver Jakobi Meyers

Pre Season Week 2

In week two against the Titans, Stidham and Hoyer once again were the two quarterbacks to play. The Patriots cut Danny Etling at this point, marking his victory over the former 7th round pick. Hoyer threw 55 yards, one interception, and he completed 6/8 of his passes. Stidham, on the other hand, threw for 193 yards, one touchdown, and completed 14/19 of his passes. Stidham destroyed this week and began to prove that he would be the backup this season.

Pre Season Week 3

In week three against the Panthers, Tom Brady and Stidham both played. This game was meant mainly for players who had the best chance to make the roster. This shows that, at the time, they had Stidham potentially making the roster over Hoyer. Stidham threw for 134 yards and completed 14/19 of his passes. His continued success marked the point in which the media began to believe the hype.

Pre Season Week 4

In week four against the Giants, Stidham was the only quarterback to play. This was his last true chance to prove that he could be the backup for Brady, as only roster bubble players slotted into the lineup. Stidham threw for 225 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Despite looking shaky at times, he showed that he ultimately had what it took to be a backup at the NFL level.

Conclusion

Overall, Stidham threw for 721 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. He won the backup role as the underdog since everyone believed it would be Hoyer. If the Patriots go without drafting another quarterback over the next few seasons, it is entirely possible that Stidham could be the heir to Brady’s throne.
