Jared Spurgeon was drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 NHL draft by the New York Islanders, 156th overall. He never played a game in the NHL for the Islanders. They had failed to sign him. Now entering his 10th NHL season, Spurgeon has a fresh, seven-year, $53 million deal.

Breaking Down Spurgeon’s Contract

To start off, in the first four years of his contract, he has a no-movement clause (NMC). In the following three years, he has a modified no-trade clause (M-NTC) which he has a 10-team no-trade list. In his first two years, $8 million of his combined $18 million will be bonuses. Every other year is just base salary. According to @RussoHockey via twitter, here is how his full contract will go:

2020-21: $9M, inc. $4M signing bonus
2021-22: $9M, inc. $4M SB
2022-23: $6
2023-24: $8M
2024-25: $8M
2025-26: $7M
2026-27: $6.025M

The contract will go into effect after the 2019-20 NHL season.

Numbers

The full contract is $53 million divided amongst seven years. Spurgeon’s average annual value (AAV) is $7,575,000. This past season, in all 82 games, he put up 14 goals and 29 assists, for 43 points, as a right-handed defenseman. Was this a good deal?
