The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed forward Brayden Point to a three year, $20.25 million contract. With his rookie contract coming to an end, Point saw himself amongst a large pool of restricted free agents (RFAs).
Brayden Point Re-signs With Tampa Bay Lightning
Last season, the Lightning centreman saw a significant increase in his overall numbers. In 79 games, he managed to amass 41 goals, 51 assists for a total of 92 points.
According to Pierre LeBrun, the three year contract breaks down into the following numbers:
Breakdown of Point contract:
Year 1, $5.25 M total ($1 M salary, $4.25 M signing bonus)
Year 2, $6.5 M total ($3 M salary, $3.5 M SB)
Year 3, $9 M all salary— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) September 23, 2019
Overall, the contract works out as an agreeable term for both player and organization when compared to other deals negotiated in the RFA market. Most notably, fans may be tempted to compare this deal to that of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner.
One must also ask whether this contract will set the tone for remaining players on the restricted free agent market. Those still left to sign include: Mikko Rantanen of the Colorado Avalanche, Kyle Connor and Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets and Matthew Tkachuk of the Calgary Flames.
