There’s a new addition to the list of dramatic events this offseason for the Golden State Warriors. Klay Thompson could be not only be missing this season, but 2020-2021 as well.
Klay Thompson Could Miss Two Years
Science Says Two Years
A few days ago, Heavy.com released information from a paper by Dr. Christopher Nagelli and Dr. Tim Hewart, both of Mayo Clinic. The paper explains that athletes should spend a minimum of two years recovering from a torn ACL before playing again. This quote from Dr. Hewett is also included in the report:
“Please do share that with Klay,” Dr. Hewett, who has consulted with NBA trainers in the past, told Heavy.com. “This is not my opinion. People say to me, ‘Well, that is your opinion, there are other opinions.’ No, I deal in science and I deal in fact. People don’t like to hear it but it does not change the facts, and that facts are that you’re at risk for re-injury before two years and you won’t be the same player in the first year.”

Looking Ahead
Let’s assume Thompson misses the next two seasons. Golden State still has three years of control of him afterwards. Given his importance on both sides of the ball, one can assume they will at least consider resting him two years. Thompson is usually tasked with guarding the opponent’s best wing scoring threat. Proper lateral movement and agility will be key.
Torn ACL’s are nothing to be played with. Thompson’s former teammate DeMarcus Cousins suffered a re-injury of his earlier this summer and is sidelined for quite some time.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported a recovery time of 5-7 months back in July, much shorter than this newly reported two-year recovery. Klay comes across as the type of athlete who would shoot for the 5-7 month option. However, he may want to reconsider. Him being at 100% is crucial to the Warriors hopes of returning to the NBA Finals anytime soon.
