Toronto Maple Leafs: In The Pipeline

Every team hopes to have good young talent in their prospect pipeline and the Toronto Maple Leafs have just that. Both Nick Robertson and Semyon Der-Arguchintsev are having a great season so far. They are both playing for the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

The Players

Nick Robertson: Robertson was drafted in the second round of the 2019 National Hockey League (NHL) draft in June, going 53rd overall and is looking like a steal for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Last season Robertson had 55 points in 54 games for the Peterborough Petes in the OHL. This season he already has 18 points in his first nine games and is currently sitting third in OHL scoring. He is also sitting in first place for goals with 11. On September 19th Robertson signed a three year entry level contract with the Maple Leafs. Robertson should make a great addition to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL) next season. I think there is a chance we could see Robertson playing with the Maple Leafs by 2021, but for sure by 2022.

Semyon Der-Arguchintsev: In 2018 at the NHL draft in Dallas, the Maple Leafs used their third round pick to select Der-Arguchintsev 76th overall. Just like Peterborough teammate and fellow Maple Leafs prospect Nick Robertson, Der-Arguchintsev has 18 points in nine games. Last season Der-Arguchintsev only played 62 games for Peterborough picking up 46 points. He also played three games with the Newfoundland Growlers in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) recording two points. Der-Arguchintsev collected two points in nine ECHL Playoff games for the Growlers helping them win the Kelly Cup as ECHL Champions. It’s likely that Der-Arguchintsev will join Nick Robertson in the AHL next season with the Marlies.

Summary

While both these players continue to tear it up in the OHL, the Maple Leafs must be proud of their picks. For now the Maple Leafs will have to let the Peterborough Petes enjoy the talents of Robertson and Der-Arguchintsev. The future is definitely looking bright for these two.
