Bundesliga Matchday Eight Review

With the Bundesliga now finishing it’s eighth matchday of the season, the Bundesliga title race is tight to say the least. There is only two points that separate ninth place from top of the table. At this moment, every point counts.

Eintracht got some much needed points in the opening game of Matchday Eight. Goncalo Paciencia scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the game, one of which was a penalty. Leverkusen started pushing back during the second half challenging Frederick Ronnow, but Bas Dost secured the victory with a late third goal to give Eintracht Frankfurt the win 3-0.

Union Berlin 2-0 SC Freiburg

Nearing the bottom of the table, Union Berlin needed to get off the right foot and they did just that with a first minute right footed finish from Marius Bülter. After that, Freiburg dominated the possession, but couldn’t salvage a goal. Marcus Ingvartsen netted goal in the 84th minute to secure the 2-0 win for Union Berlin over SC Freiburg.

Augsburg 2-2 Bayern Munich

Marco Richter of Augsburg scored just 27 seconds into the match to give Augsburg the early lead. After this, Bayern suffered an even bigger blow with Niklas Süle tearing his ACL and limping off. Lewandowski then scored an equalizer to extend his goal scoring streak in the Bundesliga. After an early second half goal by Serge Gnabry, Bayern thought they would walk away the winners. Unfortunately for them, Alfred Finbogason scored a 91st minute equalizer to salvage a point for Augsburg in a 2-2 draw.

Werder Bremen 1-1 Hertha Berlin

Early in the game, American Josh Sargent scored a deflected goal to give Werder Bremen the lead. Sargent then became the youngest player in Bremen history to get four goals in the Bundesliga. Hertha spoiled the goal and celebration in the 70th minute when Dodi Lukebakio clinically finished a low-driven shot into the bottom corner to salvage a point for Hertha Berlin in the 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen.

RB Leipzig 1-1 Wolfsburg

After a 0-0 first half, Timo Werner scored in the 54th minute to give RB Leipzig the lead over Wolfsburg. It seemed as though Leipzig would go atop of the table until Wout Weghorst scored in the 82nd minute to salvage a point for Wolfsburg and keep them second on the Bundesliga table.

Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 Mainz

With both teams sitting near the bottom of the table, Fortuna and Mainz were both looking to climb out of the basement with a win. Unfortunately for Mainz, Edimilson Fernandes was given a second yellow shortly after 45 minutes had passed. Fortuna then took advantage of the ten men with a header by Rouwen Hennings in the 82nd minute.

Dortmund 1-0 Gladbach

The Dortmund vs Gladbach game was lively to say the least. Dortmund had two goals ruled out thanks to VAR, and they were lucky to not give up a penalty since VAR did not step in. Marco Reus had a clinical finish in the 58th minute for the only goal of the game and Dortmund lost their goalkeeper Roman Bürki to an injury. The win was crucial for Dortmund to keep them in the race and put them back in the top four.

Koln got their first win of the season to pull them out of the bottom three of the Bundesliga table. Simon Terodde scored an early goal in the 8th minute that went to VAR and was upheld. Louis Schaub and Sebastian Bornauw both added second half headers to secure the 3-0 win over Paderborn who still have only scored one point this season and sit bottom of the table.

Hoffenheim 2-0 Schalke 04

In a game largely controlled by Schalke, as they were denied by the post, Schalke failed to score a goal. Because of this, Schalke paid the price with a second half rebound goal scored by Andrej Kramaric assisted by Ihlas Bebou. 14 minutes later, Ihlas got his own with a goal in the 85th minute. Hoffenheim continues their winning streak and snuck away with this one to pull themselves into seventh place.

This is now the table for the Bundesliga following these games.
