Nate Solder to Browns Possible? Rumors Swirling.

It looks as though the Browns have a backup plan if they are unable to obtain Trent Williams. According to a tweet from Jason La Canfora, that plan is Nate Solder.

This new trade rumor confirms that the Browns are clearly unhappy with Greg Robinson at left tackle this year. With rumors of effort concerns and the significant drop off in play this year, a new left tackle seems like a near-lock.

Contract Implications

The one thing we know about Solder is, he is expensive. Just two years ago, the Giants mad Solder the highest-paid left tackle in the NFL(at that time) with a four-year, $62 million contract. With $40 million still left and an underwhelming year and a half, the Giants are open to trade. He is unlikely to be part of the future in New York, so a deal is very much possible. It would be an expensive move, but John Dorsey has never been afraid to make a move he likes regardless of the contract.

Is Solder Better?

After watching the Browns offensive line all year, the answer would be a quick yes. But is that the right answer? If the effort rumors are true with Greg, then it is. If he has no desire to be great, then nearly any tackle in the NFL would be better. Per Pro Football Focus Solder has a 64.4 overall grade. Greg Robinson has an overall grade of 67.8. If you go by just those numbers, you’re getting essentially the same tackle. Even with a slightly worse grade, the Browns should make this move. Any player that has the effort being given questioned does not need to be a part of the club. Solder will provide you with everything he has and is a previous SuperBowl champ, so that adds winning experience also. This trade is a win for the Browns as long as the cost is reasonable.
