Premier League Week 9 Review and Power Rankings

This game gets Everton back on track. After falling into the relegation zone, Everton looked like a struggling team. However, with this win, it ends their losing run and may just save Everton’s season. They now go to fifteenth on the table and will need to keep winning. On the other hand, West Ham has not won since September 22 and have fallen to eleventh. They looked extremely prepared to start the season, but have fallen away. Wins are definitely needed for the Hammers right now.

Everton 2-0 West Ham

Bournemouth 0-0 Norwich

Both teams got their first shut outs of the season. By shutting down Norwich’s Pukki, Bournemouth is in tenth and will want to stay in the top ten. Alternatively, this draw was very important for Bournemouth’s opponent. Norwich earned their first away point of the season and are still still trying to get themselves out of the bottom three.

Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton

Brighton took the lead early in the first half and then went down to ten men. Afterwards, Brighton got a red card and gave up two goals to Aston Villa. Due to this loss, Brighton is slipping down farther in the table and is near the relegation zone. On the opposite side, this win carries Aston Villa to twelfth in the table and it looks look like they are getting better as the season progresses.

Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

This win gives the home team, Chelsea, three successive wins and a spot in the top four. They have progressed very well into this position after falling behind early in the season. Conversely, Newcastle looks to be falling under and are currently in the relegation zone. They will need wins desperately to get themselves out of it. Losing 1-0 to Chelsea is not a bad result and for Newcastle, it is one to build off of.

Leicester 2-1 Burnley

After being behind 1-0, Leicester was ready to fight. They came back at home and won 2-1 with goals from Tielemans and Jamie Vardy. This win keeps Leicester in third and ready for much more. At the same time, Burnley will not regret this loss too much. In the top ten, Burnley would be satisfied and happy with the position they are in. However, they would probably prefer to be higher in the table.

Tottenham 1-1 Watford

At home, Tottenham were the clear favorites in this matchup. Despite Watford being dead last in the Premier League, they can still put up a wonderful fight. Tottenham just could not score, until they equalized in the 86th minute. They will want this match back and as a “top six” team, they need to improve. Alternatively, this result was perfect for Watford who really need as many points as they can get. A point against a team like Tottenham is good for this struggling team.

Wolverhampton 1-1 Southampton

A game that could have possibly gotten Wolves to seventh ended in a draw as Southampton ends their losing streak. Wolves will surely be disappointed, but they will have more opportunities and they are now out of the relegation zone. Comparatively, Southampton is on the edge of the relegation zone and will be relieved to have finally ended their losing streak.

Manchester City 2-0 Crystal Palace

To keep the pressure on Liverpool, Man City, away from home, won against a tough Crystal Palace team. Two goals late in the first half solidified a City victory and it keeps them in second place. As a result, Palace go to sixth and are still a great team that is still looking for much more this season. At home, Palace needs to improve.

Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool

The Match of the Weekend. A shocking draw as Man United scored early and Liverpool equalized in the latter stages of the match. A controversial VAR game with Liverpool arguing United’s goal should have been disallowed because of a foul in the buildup. Man United will be ecstatic with this result as they have been unable to conjure up much this season. Conversely, Liverpool will be disappointed because this opens the door for the title contenders as they continue to try to reach Liverpool. Liverpool’s lead is now only six points.

Sheffield United 1-0 Arsenal

This match was a complete upset. A newly promoted team takes down an experienced Arsenal team. Sheffield United defended for their lives and were able to conquer over Arsenal barely. Arsenal should be disappointed with this result as it drops them out of the top four. Slip ups like this are not good for top four contenders. Sheffield rises up to ninth and looks to capitalize on this top ten position.
