Penguins Acquire Martinsen, Pick from Ducks

October 25, 2019- The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded defenseman Erik Gudbranson to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Andreas Martinsen, and a 2021 7th round pick.

Gudbranson, 27, is currently in the 2nd year of his 3-year contract, and makes $4.0 million AAV cap hit. He was traded to the Penguins during the 2018-2019 season. Since entering the league in 2011-2012 he posted 64 points, (16 goals, 48 assists), in 474 career games. He accumulated 490 penalty minutes across his career.

Martinsen, 29, is signed on a two-way contract through the end of the 2019-2020 season. He carries an AAV of $750,000 at the NHL level. He will report to to the Wilkes-Barrie/Scranton Penguins in the AHL, according to NHL.com.

Martinsen is a 6-foot-2, 225 pound forward who has played a total of 152 games over five seasons at the NHL level. He has played for the Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadians, and the Chicago Blackhawks, respectively. For his career, he has posted a modest 23 points, (nine goals, 14 assists), as well as 110 penalty minutes.

Based on the numbers here, the Pens receive an enforcer, while giving up an enforcer. Because the Penguins have a surplus of defensemen at the NHL level, including Letang, Dumolin, Petterson, Riikola, Johnson, and Schultz, the trade makes sense. So, the Penguins gain a bottom six enforcer, while gaining $4 million in salary cap space back. This is because Martinsen is assigned to Wilkes-Barrie/Scranton. The Penguins also receive a draft pick out of this trade, as well.
