Recently, I asked my followers on twitter (@OddNHLFan) to send in some Taylor Hall mock trades. We got a healthy mix of trades, some good, and others… interesting. While the New Jersey Devils might not even trade him, it is still fun to speculate.

The Jokers
Before I get into the actual trades, some people made jokes in the comment section, so I’ll just post a few right here:
There was many more that included Hall for Adam Larsson, as expected, and a few others I didn’t include. Lets hop into the ones that others sent in!
Hall (With Extension) to Colorado for Newhook, Timmins, 1st and 3rd
When I saw this, I liked it. Conor Timmins is a defensive prospect for the Colorado Avalanche with a medium top-4 potential. Alex Newhook is also a prospect for the Avs, with a high top-6 potential. The 1st round pick which Dr Salt specified was a 2020 1st is great, along with a 2020 3rd. The trade for the Devils is good because they get two really good prospects with promising futures and two picks in a heavily talented draft. The trade is good for the Avalanche because they get an elite talent to help their top-6, especially with captain, Gabriel Landeskog, out long term.
I could easily see Ray Shero doing this, but maybe not as much for Joe Sakic. Sakic would probably hesitate for giving away two of his top three prospects. I think he’d do it because the Avs already have a super promising defense led by young gun Cale Makar, and prospect Bowen Byram. Add Samuel Girard and Nikita Zadorov and you get an elite top-4 young defensive core. Newhook was recently drafted 17th overall this past draft. He’d be NHL ready in about 1-2 years. The Avalanche are in a Stanley Cup push right now and will do many things to acquire pieces for a potential cup run. Rating: 9.5/10
Hall and Coleman to Calgary for Johnny Gaudreau
This is very interesting. I think that Hall and Johnny Gaudreau are both similar players by their playing style, which is play-making. Gaudreau is a bit younger and is more healthy, but isn’t playing his best hockey right now. He hit 99 points last season, but only has 14 points in 16 games. Those aren’t bad stats, but not Johnny Gaudreau level. With Blake Coleman, he is severely underrated. He is an elite penalty killer, and we all saw both of his one-handed goals. He is speedy, and a top-9 player. Coleman can easily fit into Calgary’s line-up, but one problem: Cap.
Doing the math, if the Flames made this trade, they’d be over the cap hit. So if this trade happens, there will need to be another move, which could be sending down a forward. With all of this, Calgary needs to be assured that Hall will re-sign with them, or they’ll lose two elite talents in the span of four months. If a Hall contract is assured, maybe. It is up to both general managers’ wants/needs. Rating: 8/10
Hall to Columbus for Zach Werenski
Out of all of the trades you guys sent me, this was the one I was most interested in, and put the most thought into. A one for one trade. Now, I’m not sure if Columbus is willing to give up a corner stone piece of their defense in Zach Werenski for a pending UFA. He’s a 50 point defenseman with solid defending statistics. Taylor Hall said he wants to be on a playoff team. I don’t think Columbus is a playoff team, or will be for a little bit. I also think the Blue Jackets don’t want to take any chances on pending ufas. They lost Artemi Panarin, Sergei Bobrovsky, and Matt Duchene in 2019. Rating: 5/10
Hall to Ottawa for Alex Formenton, 2nd Round Pick
This didn’t make sense, but lets look at it. Despite being injury prone, an elite talent in Hall will still be getting a boat-load of a return. I don’t think the Devils are interested in Alex Formenton, I’m not high on him at all. The Senators wouldn’t want to do this deal because they’re in a bit of a rebuilding phase. The 2nd round pick won’t be enough of a sweetener for the trade, and the Devils would just hang up. Rating: 2.5/10
Hall to Tampa Bay for Johnson, McDonough, Raddysh, and 2nd
Kyle says in response to this tweet that this won’t happen, and I can agree with him. Here is the main problems: Ryan McDonough and Tyler Johnson both have No Trade Clauses (NTC). Tampa Bay wouldn’t give up those guys because they think they can win a cup with the team they have, and both Johnson and McDonough are huge pieces to the puzzle. Taylor Raddysh is a great young prospect for the Bolts, putting up 46 points in his first full AHL season last year. I just believe that everything that Tampa Bay is giving up hurts their team more than helps, plus it isn’t guaranteed that Johnson and McDonough waive their NTC. Rating: 4.5/10
Hall & 3rd to Edmonton for Jones, Larsson, Yamamoto, and 1st
Finally, I have a tweet from Luke. This trade for Edmonton is giving up two prospects, a former Devil, and a first. The Edmonton Oilers need offensive depth, and are getting just that with Taylor Hall. The Devils are getting forward prospect, Kailer Yamamoto with medium top-6 potential, defensive prospect, Caleb Jones with medium top-6 potential, a medium top-4 defenseman, and a first rounder. I’d be completely fine with bringing back Adam Larsson. He never fit in in the Oilers organization. Larsson was great when he played under John Hynes’ system back in the 2015-16 season. I think it’s a fair trade for both sides. Rating: 9.5/10
Thank you to all the people who sent in tweets. I will be doing a part two, because I missed quite a bit of trades from you guys that I really like.
