Recently I have been lucky enough to reach out to 4 star recruit, and Wisconsin commit, Ben Carlson. I reached out for a little interview on his mindset of choosing Wisconsin, and just about his personal goals going into college. Ben is a 6’9, 205 lb PF out of Minnesota. Here is what we talked about.

Off-season work
Talking to any athlete, you know that the off-season is going to be the most important part of the athlete’s growth with their game and body so I fired that question right away.
Q: Personally what have you worked on the most this off-season?
His answer: “I’ve worked a lot on my three point shot this off-season and I’ve seen big improvements in it so far.”
The three point shot is a very important part of the game now a days, and the Wisconsin commit looks like he can play the stretch four on the next level, with his inside out game.
The “Wisco” way
Q: What are you going to do to get ready to play the way Wisconsin Basketball plays?
His answer: “I think I am already a great fit for how Wisconsin plays, so I just need to continue to improve my game to get ready for the next level.”
Personal goals
Q: What are a few goals this year that you have for yourself in general?
His answer: “My goal is to make it back to the state tournament this year and I want to continue to improve my own skills to get ready for college.”
Recruiting
Q: What was the recruiting process like? What teams were you considering that fit your style of play?
His answer: “It was difficult to pick just one school because I had so many great options. But I think it just came down to where I thought I fit best.”
He did not say this in the interview, but he had offers from Purdue, Stanford, Xavier, Colorado, Creighton, Davidson, Iowa, Iowa St, Kansas St, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio St, Wake Forest, and Michigan. He only visited the first four, plus Wisconsin, which he chose.
The decision
Q: Finally, why did you choose to go to Wisconsin?
His answer: “I picked Wisconsin because I believe that they are the best fit for me not only as a basketball player, but as a student and person. I think there are many opportunities at Wisconsin for me.”
It was a great interview, and Ben is such a great person overall. I was very honored that he accepted my interview, and hope him all of the best.
