The New York Jets have won a football game. In the battle of New York, the Jets beat the Giants in a home town rivalry. This now means both New York teams have two wins on the season. Neither team has any realistic hope for the playoffs. However, there are several things to take away from this game for the Jets.

Jamal Adams is really, really good
Adams was recently the talks of trade rumors, which led to a dispute with the front office. Earlier this week, however, Adams and the Jets brass made amends. As a result, Adams responded by leading the team with nine tackles, four QB pressures, two sacks, and two forced fumbles. Oh, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Additionally, Adams leaped over the line to stop Daniel Jones from rushing forward on a critical 4th and 1. Sunday’s performance earned Adams AFC defensive player of the week. On the season, Adams has a Pro Football Focus rating of 89.8 and leads the Jets with 61 tackles. He is well on his way to another Pro Bowl.

Sam Darnold can win games
Much has been made of the Jets’ offensive struggles this season. Conveniently, this past weekend, they faced a Giants’ defense that allows the second-most yards per attempt in the NFL. Consequently, this allowed Sam Darnold to put together the 7th best quarterback performance of week 10, according to Football Outsiders. Darnold ended the game 19/30 with 230 yards and one touchdown. Specifically, 102 passing yards on third down. However, Darnold was not perfect did struggle in the middle of the game. He completed only three passes between the start of the second quarter and the end of the third. Regardless, he did not turn the ball over for the first time since Week 1 against the Bills. In the NFL, the team that wins the turnover battle wins the game 78% of the time.
Looking Forward
Ultimately, this game showed that if Darnold limits turnovers, Jamal Adams and company on defense can win games. It’s easy to diminish this win because the Jets beat the Giants, who are also near the bottom of the NFL. In fact, with the Jets’ upcoming schedule being ranked as the second easiest, they should be feeling pretty confident. Impressively, the Jets rush defense ranks second in the NFL. Over the next four weeks, the Jets face the bottom three rush offenses in the NFL: at Washington, at Cincinnati, and home against Miami. Realistically, these are three games that the Jets can win and put themselves at 5-8 by week 14. In conclusion, this may be what Jets Christopher Johnson had in mind when announcing to keep Adam Gase until at least 2020.
