The Browns won a huge game last night against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and nobody cares. The talk of the night and morning shows was the atrocious display at the end by Myles Garrett. Garrett lost his cool during a fight at the end, ripping the helmet off Mason Rudolph, then subsequently hitting him over the head with it. That was followed by Maurkice Pouncey flying in and repeatedly punching and kicking Myles while he was on the ground. Larry Ogunjobi shortly after that decided to hit Rudolph from behind. It was just an ugly display after what should have been a great win by the Browns. Let’s get to what won the Browns the game.
Joe Schober
Ok, I don’t know how you can describe Joe’s incredible performance other than the numbers.
- Ten Tackles
- Two For Loss
- Two interceptions
- Four Pass Defensed
- Two Quarterback hits
- One sack
Schobert is undervalued by Browns’ fans and most fans/media in general, but last night showed how great of a linebacker he is. In a night where the defense shined for most of it, Schobert was the brightest of them all.
Baker Mayfield
The numbers were not overwhelming 17/32 for 193 yards and two touchdowns, but we saw a bit of last year’s Baker Mayfield. For most of the game, he was in control and found ways to extend plays the right way. He maneuvered the pocket better last night than at any point this season. In the end, Baker and the Browns offense made enough plays to win. In a game against another top defense in the NFL, that is all you can ask from them.
It was not all pretty as Baker and Odell still are hit and miss right now. The touchdown to Carlson was not a smart throw, but the young tight end made a great catch. Overall the performance was solid by Baker against a defense that has been incredible since acquiring Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Chad Thomas
Finally, we get to Chad Thomas, a name that is synonymous with bad draft pick for most of the Cleveland fan base and media. The young defensive lineman had zero impact in his rookie season and was not impacting this season until last night. Thomas was part of a front four that dominated a Steelers line sporting three pro-bowlers the entire night. He had a sack and a pass defense along with three tackles, one for a loss. If he can start to contribute to the front even close to what he did last night, that will only make it that much better once Olivier Vernon is back from injury.
Random Thoughts
The offense did look more in sync overall against a tough opponent. Freddie seemed to have a sound gameplan and was able to prevent some of the boneheaded play calling from weeks past.
Steve Wilks finally did what I thought he would do two weeks ago in Denver and attacked a young inexperienced quarterback relentlessly. The defense got after the quarterback and took the ball away four times. That is a good night for any defense in the NFL.
Last night was probably the worst game of the year for the special teams unit with the two missed field goals and an illegal touch of the ball call. They still covered kicks well and overall played soundly outside of that.
Back to Myles. What he did was absolutely stupid and completely out of character for him. Anyone trying to form a pattern with a late hit and a little skirmish that happens about once a week is stretching it to me. He should be suspended and fined and whatever else you can do for such a horrible act, period.
The Steelers’ side of the fight was also not the best site either. Mason Rudolph took exception to what he saw as a late hit. He then tried to rip Myles’s helmet from his head and proceeded to kick him in the groin. All of this while continuing to scream at him. He is not just an innocent victim in all of this. Also, Maurkice Pouncey should receive a suspension for not only flying in and repeatedly punching Myles but then jumping up and kicking and stomping on him repeatedly. This was an all-around bad end for last night’s game.
On to Miami.
