The Washington Redskins are 1-8. The New York Jets are 2-7. Washington is 0-4 at home this season. They have also lost eight consecutive games at home. The Jets are 0-4 on the road this season. Something has got to give.
Two Struggling Teams
The Washington Redskins lone win came against the Jets divisional opponent, the Miami Dolphins. The Jets two wins came against the Redskins divisional opponents, Cowboys and Giants. Neither teams are headed to the playoffs, mainly playing for pride and respect at this point.
Offensive Offense
It’s been 13 quarters since the Washington Redskins scored a touchdown. And the Redskins have scored the fewest overall touchdowns in the league, having scored 11.
The Jets have experienced some offensive struggles of their own. They are the worst in the NFL in passing touchdowns. Their platoon of QB’s has only thrown seven. This is a chance for both teams to improve on those statistics.
Key Matchups
Since switching coaches, the Washington Redskins have made an effort to run the ball more. Adrian Peterson has benefited the most from this philosophical change. In the last four games, Peterson is averaging 18.8 carries per game and 95.8 yards on the ground. The Jets are coming off of a great performance against Saquon Barkley. The Jets are, also, only allowing 3.0 yards per carry, which is tops in the league. Stopping the run puts more pressure on Dwayne Haskins. The rookie is making his second career start.
The strength of the Washington Redskins is their defensive front, led by Matt Ioannidis and Jonathan Allen. If they can keep Le’Veon Bell in check and pressure Sam Darnold, they can disrupt the Jet’s offense, perhaps causing an early turnover. Extra possessions and shorter fields could give Haskins a better opportunity to pick on the suspect secondary of the Jets.
Prediction
It’s the old, movable object vs. the stoppable force, game. Darnold didn’t turn the ball over last week, and that will be the key to this game. Turnovers! The defense that forces the most turnovers, setting their young quarterbacks up with excellent field position, wins this low scoring game.
The Washington Redskins, with a late sack, causing a fumble, get the win with a last-second field goal. Final score 23-20. HTTR!
