Gregorius will be re-united with Manager Joe Girardi, whom he played for when he was on the Yankees. Girardi had previously expressed interest in signing the shortstop.
Gregorius had a break out year for New York in 2018, clubbing a career .829 OPS, and finishing 20th in the AL MVP race. However, last season Didi went through a huge slump, and struggled, only playing in 82 games.
The signing likely forces the Phillies to move Jean Segura to second or third base. Second baseman, Cesar Hernandez was non-tendered earlier in the month leaving an opening for the Phillies on the infield. Scott Kingery will likely play either second or third base next season with Rhys Hoskins at first.
Overall, it’s a solid signing for the Phillies given they needed an infielder and a one year deal is relatively risk-free.
