Anthony Mantha Could Return in the Next 10 Days

Anthony Mantha could return for the Red Wings in the next 10 days, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Anthony Mantha has not played a game for the Detroit Red Wings since he was slew footed by Jake Muzzin of the Toronto Maple Leafs on December 21st. There was an ugly scuffle at the end of the game that saw the 25-year-old right-winger fall to the ice amidst the chaos.

Both teams knew the game was out of reach at that point during the game, as the Maple Leafs led the game 4-1 with under two minutes to play in the game. These kinds of plays are especially in a league that is concerned about fighting, as the effects repeated blows to the head become more and more apparent.

A Return

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press is reporting that Mantha is targeting “a return next week or around February 15th.” This news is welcome given the fact that the Red Wings were unsure whether or not Mantha would return at all during this season.

This news comes as the Red Wings had lost nine games in a row before taking a win in Buffalo. There is no rush for Mantha to return, given that the team has the worst record in the league. However, it would be good for Mantha to return to the team and perhaps return to the form that saw him tally 12 goals and 24 points before he was sidelined with a knee injury on November 23, against the New Jersey Devils.

Mantha’s injury is one of many for the Red Wings team this season, as they were shutout in the back to back games after they were off for the All-Star break and the bye week that every team has during the season.

Other Injuries

Frans Nielsen and Mike Green were placed on injured reserve today retroactive to January 20th. Both players are listed as having upper-body-injuries. In corresponding moves, the Red Wings recalled Taro Hirose and Gustav Lindstrom from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Lindstrom posted on the Red Wings’ website that it’s Lindstrom with an N. A play on the fact that Nicklas Lidstrom previously played for the team for 20 seasons. Lidstrom was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015. Lindstrom made his NHL debut against the Sabres and will try to live up to his “namesake” from Sweden.
