Jarvis Landry Decides to have Hip Surgery

The Browns announced Thursday that Pro Bowl wideout Jarvis Landry underwent hip surgery earlier this month. The injury bothered Landry throughout the 2019 season even as he played in every game. By all accounts, Landry should be ready to go for the 2020 season.

Landry had initially decided to opt-out of having the hip surgery. Then, after three weeks of rest, he participated in the Pro Bowl. Even at half speed, Landry stated that he realized how much pain he was still dealing with. Per Landry, “Going into Pro Bowl, given that I was off three weeks, and thinking that I was going to feel better and then playing in the game — which obviously wasn’t really a game, we were just jogging around, having fun — and I realized how much pain I was in from even just doing that.” The surgery was completed on February 4th by Dr. Chris Larson in Minneapolis.

Per Dr. Larsen, “He started to get a little cartilage delamination, but there was no microfracture or anything like that,” Larson said. “All I do is just shave it a little bit, and you kind of leave it there. You don’t want to start removing too much. So that should just be stable. Otherwise had a really good-looking hip joint.” Larson continued, “Getting those out and making sure I can preserve and save the labrum, which I was able to and repair it back, that was probably the hardest part,” Larson said. ”… So I really feel like he’s going to feel like mechanically; this just works better.”

Landry could be Better in 2020

Landry stated he was likely “75 to 80 percent” healthy in 2019. Yet he led the Browns with 83 catches for 1,174 yards and six touchdowns en route to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl. The injury, combined with the offensive struggles in 2019, should actually make Browns fans excited. Imagine what a healthy Jarvis Landry can do with a better offensive system in 2020.
