Collin Sexton is Evolving into a Star

The second year guard out of the University of Alabama, Collin Sexton, has been on a year this season. After a second team All-Rookie team berth last year, Sexton still isn’t satisfied. His second half of the season last year is what earned him the honor.

The Young Bull averaged 16.7 points per game and 3 assists a game. After a switch to shooting guard in his second season, Sexton is now averaging 20.5 points per game on 47/39/85 shooting percentages. More efficient numbers in the sophomore season have been provided by his dedication to the game. Sexton has got better as a decision maker and as a scorer. His assist numbers aren’t up, but he makes the right plays when he needs to. He’s been praised by teammates this year who say he doesn’t get enough recognition for his hard work.

This kind of praise from a vet like Kevin Love, who’s played with some of the best players in the world, is very special. We can see his progress from his first year to his second. It’s great to see as a fan all of the work that he’s put in. The thing I love most about Sexton is that he just blocks out any noise and goes to work. He’s a humble guy that always has a chip on his shoulder.

Going into February 28th of this year, his career high in the points category was 31 points. He tied that against the Pelicans that night. Then on March 2nd he beat that record by one point with 32 points. Two nights later he dropped 41 points on 17 of 30 shooting the ball to go with 6 assists. A career night for the 21 year old. This game made him only the third Cavalier player in history with a 40 point game before turning 22 (LeBron James, Kyrie Irving).

And in a two game win streak on back-to-back nights, Sexton scored 25 against the Nuggets and 26 against the Spurs. He’s become the Cavaliers’ go-to guy on offense. He’s one of the best scorers in his draft class with names like Luka Doncic and Trae Young to compete with.

But for some odd reason, a lot of Cleveland fans aren’t satisfied with Sexton. His switch to the two-guard has improved his IQ and game in general, in my opinion, tremendously. Sexton embodies Cleveland with the hard work he puts in while staying quiet towards the haters. He just does him. Sexton has to be a core piece of the Cavs’ future plans.

I’m excited to see what pieces they can put around the former number eight overall pick.
