Scouting Report: Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor Bears

Coming out of Baylor University, Denzel Mims is a prospect who has been a consistent receiver for a Baylor team that has had its ups and downs over the past four years. Mims stands just barely under 6’3” and 215 pounds. In his final season with Baylor, he finished with 1,020 receiving yards, 12 touchdowns, and an average of 15.5 yards per catch. Mims is a fascinating and overlooked prospect, so let’s take a look at what makes him tick.

The Good About Mims

The number one thing that stands out about Mims is his size and ability to go get the ball. His catch radius is absolutely insane. He is the type of receiver who can easily go and get the balls that are 50/50. He also has the ability to make crazy catches on the sidelines. Mims somehow always seems to get his feet in bounds. Mims is deceptively fast for a guy of his size. In the Combine, he surprised people by running a 4.38 40 yard dash.

Mims does a pretty good job at route running. Even though he doesn’t have the best route running in the Draft, he seems to make it work. At times his footwork can be a little shoddy. His best routes are the back shoulder, fades, and verticals where he can fight for the ball. Mims does a great job of snatching the ball out of the air and even catching balls down the middle. When it comes to run blocking he does a really good job. He is very physical which causes whiffs occasionally, but the effort is appreciated.

The Bad About Mims

The worst trait for Mims is his route running. While he does well with vertical routes, he struggles with routes that cause him to have to make sharp cuts. He has high hips and that makes it hard for him to be sharp on his routes or comeback routes. His release is okay off the line but there is still work to be done. Mims does a good job of understanding the concept of manipulating and creating that space. He needs to do a better job of using his hands through press coverage to be ready for the NFL. It wouldn’t hurt for Mims to add some upper body weight to be more effective. He is a “leggy” athlete, so it would be good to add a tad bit more bulk to his upper body to compensate.

Pro Comparison

For a pro comparison, I found Kenny Golladay as a proper pro comparison. Golladay is similar in length and he has similar abilities. He has the same 50/50 ability that Mims has and he can catch the ball in tough situations. Golladay has deceptive speed and is not shy to catch the ball down the middle. Golladay is a solid receiver for the Lions and is a fair comparison for Mims.

Final Thoughts

I feel that Mims is a perfect Day 2 prospect. He is perfect for teams that are looking for a receiver that they can develop into a starter. Mims has the explosive ability and his draft stock has risen within the last few months. He had an excellent showing at the Combine and he had a phenomenal Senior Bowl. Right now I have Mims as a 2nd Rounder. He brings a lot to the table that should attract teams. From his ability to grab the 50/50 ball to his ability to make plays happen with the ball in his hand. He should be a fantastic talent for any team that chooses to pick him up.
