According to a report by Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Green Bay Packers have completed the signing of ex-Detroit Lions right tackle Rick Wagner to a two-year, $11-million deal that includes a $2.25 million base salary per season and no guarantees.
Rick Wagner Agrees to Terms with Packers
Wagner will also earn $1 million if he’s not cut by the third day of the 2021 league year. Workout bonuses vary between $250,000 up to $750,000, with a $500,000 incentive for the 2020 season.
The Packers’ first signing of free agency means that Bryan Bulaga will not remain in Wisconsin and will hit the free-agent market. Following a disappointing 2019 campaign, Detroit cut Wagner two days prior to the start of the NFL league year. His release saved the Lions $6.1 million in cap space.
Green Bay signed linebacker Christian Kirksey earlier on a two-year deal. The Packers have about $10 million remaining on their 2020 salary cap. Moreover, their next order of business could be wide receiving core to help Aaron Rodgers’ effort on the offensive side of the ball.
Wagner signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract with the Lions in 2017. However, he failed to live up to the name he made in Baltimore. He hasn’t managed to play full 16 games in either of his three seasons in the Motor City. He has considerable boots to fill after succeeding Bulaga, but the 30-year-old has the potential to thrive with his new team.
