The Jets have re-signed starting left guard Alex Lewis on a three-year, $18.6 million. New York’s whole offensive line was under fire last year, Lewis included. Now, the Jets have left a door open to getting rid of him, guaranteeing only $6 million of the deal.
The Jets Bring Back Alex Lewis
Lewis was traded to the Jets during the Draft in exchange for a 7th round pick. He provided a decent depth and started 12 of his 15 appearances. However, the Jets offensive line was a vast liability in 2019 and was unable to protect Sam Darnold.
Things get even more complicated with the departure of starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum. The Jets’ first order of business saw them bring in former Seattle tackle George Fant. With the signing of a high-profile lineman, seemingly not within Joe Douglas’ capabilities, new questions arise. Will they still pick a lineman in the first round? Moreover, what’s going to happen with the cornerback search?
The Jets haven’t managed to improve the pocket protection in the way that they wanted to. Jack Conklin signed with Cleveland, and Joe Thuney is now engaged to a trade package after New England franchise tagged him. Therefore, Lewis returning could be valuable if he can come back from a weak campaign.
Before their most recent signings, New York had nearly $46 million in cap space money. In conclusion, they now have about $30 million for 2020, with most of the team’s holes still not or barely addresses.
