New York Jets Re-Sign Brian Poole

Per Adam Schefter, the Jets are bringing back to the team one of the top free-agent cornerback targets of the offseason in Brian Poole. According to Brian Costello, the one-year deal is worth $5 million and is fully guaranteed.

Brian Poole was one of the bright spots for a slow secondary for the Jets in 2019. He shut down opponents in the slot and made a name for himself entering free agency. Nonetheless, the Jets get him back for a critical 2020 season.

Poole started 10 games and recorded one pick in 16 games. In addition, he also surrendered just 62.5 completion percentage when in coverage, plus three allowed touchdowns. He showed he can dominate big-time receivers in big-time situations.

With the team releasing Trumaine Johnson and his steady salary, getting Poole back eventually began the process of establishing New York’s new-look secondary. That won’t happen overnight but continuity should, and could, let Poole lead the passing defense to glory.

Poole also posted an allowed passer rating of 91.3 when in coverage. That was, however, a fairly small increase as opposed to his 2018 campaign with the Falcons. The Jets are likely to make a push for a big-name pass-rusher to help the Poole-led secondary. Then, the decision regarding their first-round pick will be coming.
