The Jets have added another valuable piece to their linebacking core, signing former Baltimore linebacker Patrick Onwuasor. According to Connor Hughes of The Athletic, his new contract is a one-year deal after four years spent with the Ravens.
Jets Sign Former Ravens Linebacker Patrick Onwuasor
Onwuasor joins former teammate C.J. Mosley in a deep linebacker group for the team going into 2020. Onwuasor started just 6 games last year and recorded 3 sacks. He has a total of 9.5 sacks in the past three seasons, to go with 213 tackles.
The Arizona product doesn’t have the production of an edge rusher. He is, however, a solid blitzer and could be used as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 formation. His place is not guaranteed, though – he’ll have to earn it. If the Jets sign a high-profile pass-rusher, his place could be in jeopardy if the Jets move to a 4-3 defensive scheme.
As we noted, he’ll compete for a starting job during training camp in Florham Park. Jordan Jenkins is a lock on the outside, while Mosley is in a similar situation as an ILB. Tarell Basham, who has made just 4 sacks in three career seasons, could face being relegated. Meanwhile, Avery Williamson has been a subject of conversations regarding his starting spot. However, it would take more dramatic circumstances for him to be benched or cut.
