While it wasn’t a very successful decade for the Marlins. It was one that included 17 all-stars, 8 silver sluggers, 4 gold gloves, two rebranding’s and an MVP. In this list, we will go over who were the ten best Marlins players of the 2010’s decade. The criteria for this list is based upon three factors: tenure with the Marlins, individual statistics/awards and impact to team culture.
10. Justin Bour
Justin Bour’s career in Miami can be highlighted in one word: doughnuts. The slugger who was already loved by many fans, gained national fame after putting on a show against Home Run Derby favorite Aaron Judge. After crushing an impressive 22 homeruns in the first round, Bour took a break to munch on some well-deserved doughnuts and has been a Marlins legend ever since. Bour slugged 81 homers over his four years with the fish before being traded to the Phillies.
9. Josh Johnson
Johnson spent the first three years of the decade with the Marlins. The former ace led the National League with a 2.30 ERA in 2010, garnering an all-star appearance and finishing fifth in Cy Young voting. Johnson failed to replicate that success the following year due to injury. He did come back and post a solid season in 2012, throwing close to 200 innings while striking out over 160 batters.
8. Brian Anderson
While Anderson doesn’t have that accolades of the others, he does represent the next generation of the franchise. Debuting in 2017, Anderson solidified himself as an everyday player thanks to his defensively versatility and evolving approach at the plate. Anderson not only plays multiple positions but plays them all very well with a plus arm and a plus glove. While never known for his power, Anderson busted out with 20 homeruns and 33 doubles in 120 games in 2019. Expect him to be a cornerstone of the franchise for years to come.
7. Hanley Ramirez
Arguably the face of the franchise through the 2000’s, it looked as if Ramirez would lead a young core to success for years to come. Although that wasn’t the case, Hanley still performed well as he made the all-star team in 2010. Between 2010 to 2012, he slugged 55 homeruns and swiped 73 bags over 354 games. Ramirez will always be remembered as a Marlin, even if he wasn’t there very long after the rebranding.
6. Dee Gordon
The speedster hit the ground running in Miami. Gordon led all of the MLB in hits (205) and stolen bases (58), while also leading the National League in batting average (.333) in 2015. He also won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger proving that he could get it done on both sides of the ball. After testing positive for PEDs and getting suspended for half of the 2016 season, Gordon came back in 2017 picking up where he let off, hitting .308 and leading the majors in stolen bases once again (60).
5. Marcell Ozuna
Ozuna is best known as the big bear by many in baseball. The Dominican born outfielder slugged his way to two all star games and a silver slugger with Miami, proving himself as one of the most dangerous hitters in the NL after hitting 37 homeruns and driving in 124 RBIs in 2017. Ozuna will forever be remembered as a player who embraced the Latin culture in Miami, and someone many were sad to see go.
4. Christian Yelich
Perhaps one of the most controversial trades because of what Yelich has become as a player. He showed flashes of that potential while in Miami. During his tenure, Yelich seemed to be overlooked by everyone except the Marlins fanbase. Hitting well over .280 each of his first five years, Yelich was a doubles machine, averaging at least 30 over the course of a full season. Don’t let the lack of all-star appearances fool you, he more than deserved to make his share.
3. J.T. Realmuto
Realmuto slowly grew into the best catcher in baseball while with the Marlins. While none of his stats will stick out to you, he is one of the most well-rounded players in the sport. Realmuto is a superior defender who also shows plenty of prowess at the plate. Not to mention Realmuto’s ability to take the extra bag too with his above average speed. Realmuto was an all-star and took home his first silver slugger in 2018.
2. Giancarlo Stanton
Debuting in 2010, Stanton holds ten records for the franchise, the most of any player to put on the uniform. This includes the career home run record (267), career RBIs (672) and single season home runs (59) and RBIs (132). Signing a massive deal with the Marlins in 2015, Stanton made four all-star games and took home two silver sluggers over his eight-year career with Miami. He remains to be the only Marlin to ever win an MVP award.
1. Jose Fernandez
Beloved by his teammates and the fans, Fernandez was gifted the nickname Niño for his lively personality and infectious smile. Over his four years with Miami, Fernandez was quickly on his way to becoming one of the games best young stars for years to come. Jose made two all-star games and held a career 2.58 ERA. A strikeout artist, he totaled 253 Ks in his last season. Words could never express the impact that Jose had on Miami.
Honorable Mentions: Martin Prado, Miguel Rojas, Ricky Nolasco, Steve Cishek, AJ Ramos, Gaby Sanchez
