Legendary sports broadcaster Phyllis George passes at the age of 70

Before becoming a sports broadcaster, she was in beauty pageants. In 1970, she won Miss Texas, and then a year later in 1971, she became Miss America.

After becoming Miss America in 1971, she was hired by CBS to become a reporter for The NFL Today in 1974. It made her the first female sportscaster to do so at a major network.

In 1975, she became a co-host for the pregame show working alongside Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, and Jimmy Snyder. She would with the NFL Today until 1984. Many women who want to get into sports broadcasting credit her as their inspiration. In 2017 which was 30 years after that historic moment, Beth Mowins who works with ESPN became the first woman to call a regular-season game.
