New England Patriots Finally Sign Kyle Dugger

The New England Patriots have signed their top overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, safety Kyle Dugger. The Patriots picked Dugger in the second round as the 37th overall pick. The Patriots become the first team to sign their entire draft class to their rookie deals.

Dugger’s College Stats

Kyle Dugger attended Lenoir-Rhyne University and played a total of seven games his senior year due to injuries. Dugger was still good enough to win the Cliff Harris Award, despite the shortage of games. The Cliff Harris Award was given to the best defensive player in NCAA Division II. He was named as a D2Football.com First Team All-American. The AFCA and D2CCA had awarded him Second Team All-American Honors. Dugger also earned First Team All-Conference and All-Region awards. Dugger was named National Special Teams Player of the Week in October.

He returned two punts for touchdowns against UVA-Wise and became the only player in Lenoir-Rhyne history to have two games with two punt returns for touchdowns. In that same game, Dugger became the all-time leader in punt return yardage with 929 yards. On the first defensive series of the season, he got a 30-yard pick-six and later got another interception in that game. His 164 total interception return yards ranks seventh in team history.

Overall

Dugger is a rare player who has elite size, speed, and explosiveness. He crammed his stat sheet full and used his elite traits to dominate opponents. He plays with controlled violence and carries an alpha demeanor to the field. Dugger has soft hands and has range, but he has to train his eyes and improve his fundamentals before he is coverage-ready. Dugger is a versatile, scheme-friendly safety who helps immediately in special teams and could develop into a talented NFL starter. He should become a starter within his first two seasons in the NFL.
