The Chiefs are returning 20 of 22 starters from 2019 to 2020. That still leaves 33 other players to be figured out. Here is an early look at the Chiefs’ projected roster for 2020.
Quarterback
There won’t be any significant changes to the quarterback room. Henne is a proven veteran backup that can fill in if anything were to happen to Mahomes. The team did sign Jordan Ta’amu after his strong performance in the XFL. Ta’amu would be a very long shot to make the final roster, but he has a strong chance at being the quarterback on the practice squad.
Running Back
This group is tougher to figure out. Edwards-Helaire and Damien Williams are locks to make the squad. Darrel Williams came up big for the team when they needed him last season. Edwards-Helaire has also said Darrel Williams was a mentor, and he credits him for his success at LSU. The team will want to keep them together. Darwin Thompson is still on his rookie contract, and only one of two running backs signed beyond 2021. Anthony Sherman is a lock at fullback. That leaves recent signing DeAndre Washington on the outside looking in.
Wide Receiver
The first five spots are relative locks. Pringle might have some competition, but his familiarity with the team will make him safe. The 6th spot will be the one for the taking. Maurice Ffrench was an undrafted free agent, but his speed and kick return ability make him the front runner for the final spot.
Tight End
Seals-Jones seems to have the backup job locked down. The third spot will come down to Deon Yelder and Lovett. Lovett was signed last season as an undrafted rookie. He spent time listed as a fullback due to his size and blocking ability. Those two reasons are why he has a strong shot to take the third, usually a blocking specialist, tight end spot.
Offensive Line
- Eric Fisher
- Andrew Wylie
- Austin Reiter
- Laurent Duvernay-Tardif
- Mitchell Schwartz
- Lucas Niang
- Martinas Rankin
- Nick Allegretti
- Mike Remmers
- Darryl Williams
The starting five from last season, Fisher, Wylie, Reiter, Duvernay-Tardif, and Schwartz will all be back. Niang is safe as the team’s recent third-round pick. Rankin, Allegretti, and Remmers all have a bonus as veteran players. Darryl Williams is an undrafted free agent that the Chiefs gave a sizeable contract. The interior line needs work, but with a shortened off-season, younger guys won’t have as much of a chance to compete for a spot. That should clear the way for the veterans to remain on the roster.
Defensive Tackle
Out of the entire projected roster, this group was arguably the easiest to predict. Mike Pennel made a big difference for the run defense late last season, and the team rewarded him with a new contract. Nnadi and Saunders are still on their rookie contracts and bring athleticism and pass-rushing ability to the group.
Defensive End
The first three players are essentially locks. Charlton will have to compete for his job but seems safe as of now. The fifth spot is up for grabs. Danna, the team’s fifth-round pick, is the default choice as of now, but he is not guaranteed to make the roster. Danna was a massive reach in the draft and did not have the ability that other players competing for the spot have. His draft position may keep him safe, however.
Linebacker
Hitchens, Gay, and Wilson are all safe. Ben Niemann has the advantage of being a team veteran. Harris was injured last season but is someone that GM Brett Veach has raved about in the past. Harris will make it over Dorian O’Daniel, who has failed to make it on to the field in his time with the team.
Cornerback
- Charvarius Ward
- Bashaud Breeland
- Rashad Fenton
- L’Jarius Sneed
- Thakarius “BoPete” Keyes
- Antonio Hamilton
Breeland was recently arrested but will likely remain with the team. Ward is the top corner on the team, and Fenton showed a lot of promise in 2019. Sneed and Keyes are rookies who add a lot of speed to the group. Hamilton will provide some veteran depth.
Safety
Mathieu and Thornhill might form the best safety duo in the league. Sorenson is an incumbent depth piece on the team, while Watts is still on his rookie contract and adds youthful depth. L’Jarius Snead is a very versatile player, and the team will have the option of deploying him at corner or safety.
Special Teams
Butker has proved to be one of the top kickers in the league. One of the biggest shakeups from 2019 to this projected roster is that the team released Dustin Colquitt after 15 years, and that will lead to a big shakeup. Colquitt was also the holder for Butker. Townsend was one of the prize undrafted free agents signings and seems to be the punter for the team in 2020. He also was a holder in college, which will help him. Winchester doesn’t have any competition for the long snapper position as of now.
2020 Roster
This is your 2020 Chiefs projected roster. Some new veterans and a few new rookies will shake things up a bit, but the majority of the roster will look the same as it did in 2019.
