In his first 5 games of the 2019 NFL season, Tyrell Williams averaged 60 yards and one touchdown, putting him on track for a fantastic season. However, he finished out the season with very underwhelming numbers despite his great start. Nearly half of Williams yards (307 of 651) came in the first 5 games he played in along with all but one touchdown (5 of 6).
2016 With the Chargers
Williams has had showings of productivity but hasn’t been able to produce for a full season since 2016 with the Chargers. He took over as the team’s number 1 receiver after Keenan Allen suffered a torn ACL, finishing the season with 69 catches for 1,059 yards and 7 touchdowns. It is important to note that Williams’ big season in 2016 was with Philip Rivers under center and not Derek Carr. As the number one receiver in 2019 Williams was not even close to putting up the yards he did with Rivers and the Chargers back in 2016. This does not all fall on Williams’s shoulders though, as he was certainly not Carr’s favorite target.
Impact of Darren Waller
The main reason for Williams’ lack of production during the 2019 season is none other than tight end, Darren Waller. When finally given the opportunity, Waller performed in what was a monstrous season. He caught 90 passes for 1,145 yards and three touchdowns. These numbers brought him from an unknown sixth-round pick to a respectable top-five tight end. Waller certainly became Carr’s favorite target and took the spotlight off Williams.
2020 Season
Williams will still remain a notable wide receiver for the Raiders next season. However, we could certainly see a similar situation to last year with key new additions in Henry Ruggs and Nelson Agholor. Along with star running back Josh Jacobs, the Raiders certainly have the potential to be a threat on offense. How much of an impact Tyrell Williams will have is still up in the air.
