Cody Garbrandt Returns, Interview With Mike Malott

Well UFC fans, the first event held in the Apex was nothing short of a success. Just recently, the UFC got approved to fight in their own arena in Las Vegas. Now that Woodley vs Burns is over, the UFC looks ahead to the next PPV card, UFC 250.

Perhaps the biggest storyline of the card is the return of Cody “No Love” Garbrandt. Cody was scheduled for his return back in March, before the cancellation due to COVID-19. But, nonetheless, Garbrandt will make his long-anticipated return to the UFC octagon. A return in which he hopes to end his cold spell and get his career back on track.

I had the pleasure of speaking with a renowned Garbrandt training partner, mixed martial artist Mike Malott. Below are his thoughts on how he feels about what is sure to be the biggest subject of the night.

“No Love” will be matching up against Raphael Assuncao, what have you identified as Cody’s advantage over him?

MM: “The biggest advantage physically in my mind is the speed difference. Assuncao is a solid opponent, but there is a massive gap in the striking and scrambling speed between Cody and Assuncao. This will likely be a critical factor.”

What has been the biggest point of emphasis for Cody and the team?

MM: “The main focus of the camp was “focus”. In previous fights, Cody had a lot going on and just seemed a little distracted. He worked hard, but it felt like he wasn’t enjoying the grind as much. He seems like he really wants it more than he did in the last couple of years. He’s showing up excited to train, improve and prepare. He’s training like a guy with something to prove, a bit of a chip on his shoulder now.”

The anticipation for the return must be amounting, how has Cody dealt with the pressure?

“Cody has dealt with the pressure by becoming refocused. He has rededicated himself to the sport in a similar way to how he was leading up to the world title. He is as hungry and driven as I have ever seen him. He’s focused and genuinely excited to prepare and perform.”

How do you see Cody’s return playing out?

“I see Cody going out there and putting on a clinic. There is a skill gap between these two and I think it will be pretty obvious in the fight. You’re going to see a focused, prepared and confident Cody Garbrandt this fight, and that’s a dangerous man.”

Thank you, Mike, for taking the time, I wish you all the best!
