With the 26th pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, the Oakland Athletics selected Tyler Soderstrom out of Turlock High School in Turlock, California.
A’s Select Tyler Soderstrom in the First Round
The 18-year-old catcher is the son of former Giants’ first round pick, Steve Soderstrom.
Due to his dad’s affiliation with the Giants, Tyler leaned more towards their side, but now that has changed.
“Now that the A’s selected me it’s easy to jump ship,” Soderstrom said.
Soderstrom has a strong bat. Before his season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Soderstrom was hitting .357 with one home run in five games. In his junior year, he hit .450 with four home runs. He is also a California Gatorade Player of the Year.
Tyler Soderstrom believes his bat is what will make or break his MLB career and it will determine whether he has a long career or not.
Additionally, his skills behind the dish are impressive too. He’s learned how to manage and call a game from his father and has a great arm.
Soderstrom is slated to play college ball at UCLA. If the A’s want to keep him in Northern California, they’ll need to pay over to keep him there.
The A’s will make their final four selections today in this condensed draft.
