Ever since their conception, the Oklahoma City Thunder have played their home games within the confines of Chesapeake Energy Arena. It is a place in which OKC fans have fondly dubbed “The Peake.”
For years, you may have heard players and fans alike talk about the energy in “The Peake,” using phrases such as “The Peake was rocking tonight,” etc.
According to CNBC (aggregated by Daily Thunder’s Olivia Panchal), Chesapeake Energy is filing for bankruptcy in midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
While Thunder fans mourn the thought of not being able to call the beloved arena “The Peake” anymore, this presents a new opportunity.
What is more appropriate to usher in a new era for Thunder basketball than to have the arena that the legacy was built in be changed entirely? Heck, you could even change up the logos and uniforms. My guy Logan Meyer wrote about for the Daily Thunder.
A question that arises as the intrigue behind the arena’s metamorphosis increases is… who will purchase the naming rights?
For the purposes of this article and for narrowing down selections, we will only consider Oklahoma based franchises or franchises that have a direct correlation to the Thunder (more on that later).
Love’s Truck Stop
Ask any Thunder fan, and they won’t be shy about their feelings of the jersey sponsor for OKC. The “Love’s Patch,” as it has been infamously named, was met with immediate sentiments of distaste and vitriol. It would be the most “Thunder move” ever to go all the way in on something the fans would assuredly hate.
The question is, what would they name it? While there are a plethora of terrible love puns that are to be made here, “The Love’s Shack” is the obvious answer.
Braum’s
This Oklahoma City based franchise would provide endless possibilities for the naming of the arena. But there is only one choice in my opinion, “Braum’s Ice Cream Bowl.” That name would be…. wait for it…. sweet.
Sonic Drive-In
This would be perfect due to Sonic’s headquarters being located in Oklahoma City. It would also be a GIGANTIC middle finger to the city of Seattle, as it would trigger old memories of the team they once had (Seattle SuperSonics). In the end, I don’t think the Thunder are “savage” enough to pursue a deal like this. But Sonic Stadium does have a nice ring to it.
Velveeta
No, Velveeta is not based in Oklahoma City. They are not even based in Oklahoma. But they apparently have a vested interest in the Thunder. They even suggested the perfect name. Not only that, but they also left the ball in the Thunder’s court. This seems like a no brainer to me.
What do you guys think? What’s the best name? Is there a company I missed? A name?
