Back in March, the Dallas Cowboys signed defensive player Gerald McCoy to a multi-year deal adding veteran help to the Cowboys defense. Even though he hasn’t yet played a single down, he is taking on one member of the Cowboys staff… Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones.
Gerald McCoy Upset With Owner Jerry Jones
Friday Morning, McCoy made an appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” During his appearance, he had a strong message for Jerry Jones being that Jones had yet to make a statement in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.
Commissioner Roger Goodell has spoken on this by saying “Black Lives Matter.”
McCoy’s Message
Here is what Gerald McCoy said on ESPN’s first Take:
“It don’t look good,” McCoy continued. “It doesn’t look good. You can’t be silent at a time like this. I’m new to the Cowboys organization. I’m blessed to be a part of this organization. When things are not going well for the team, you can hear him screaming. Well, this is life. This is bigger than just football, it’s bigger than money, it’s bigger than winning a Super Bowl. Something needs to be said.”
Gerald then said that he believes it is Jerry Jones’ responsibility to use his platform as the owner of the Cowboys to speak out.
“Because of his level of who he is and how many people listen to him, that’s why I’m saying it,” McCoy continued. “Everybody doesn’t have to speak up. I’m not saying everybody has to say anything. If you want to be silent, that’s fine. But the level of who he is? Yeah. I think something needs to be said.”
Jerry Speaks Out
Jerry Jones has spoken on this very topic in the past. Back in 2018, he said this: “Our policy is that you stand at the anthem, toe on the line.”
About a week before McCoy’s appearance on ESPN, the Cowboys released a video about social injustice.
