5 Free Agents the 76ers Could Sign If Someone Sits Out

With the NBA returning on July 31st, some of the Philadelphia 76ers players could sit out to be with their families and stay safe from COVID-19. If this happens, here are possible free-agent options for Philly from the free agency pool:

5. Jonah Bolden:

After the team converted Norvel Pelle’s two-way contract to a full deal, Jonah Bolden got waived by the Sixers. Bolden showed potential as a rim protector in the 2018-19 season with Philly but was unable to crack the rotation this season. He also had a brief stint with Phoenix in February but failed to earn a full deal. Bolden has shown he could be a reliable rim protector and scorer; however, he needs to limit his fouls. He wouldn’t have a significant role for Philly but would be a solid depth option.

4. Pau Gasol:

No, Pau Gasol is not retired. While he has yet to play in a game this season due to a foot injury, the veteran has expressed interest in returning. At age 40, Gasol wouldn’t be able to play a significant number of minutes for Philly. He could provide an occasional bench shift as a backup center though, especially if Kyle O’Quinn and Norvel Pelle struggle. At this point, it’s unclear if the veteran will play in the NBA again, and this could be his last chance to win another title.

3. Isaiah Thomas:

Former MVP candidate Isaiah Thomas was waived at the trade deadline by the Los Angeles Clippers. Thomas expressed his interest in returning to the NBA, specifically with Boston, but has been unable to strike a deal. The 5’9” guard is still a reliable scorer, but his defense is why he was waived. His 121 defensive rating was the worst in the NBA, making him a massive liability on that end of the floor. Thomas likely wouldn’t always play but could provide the occasional scoring plug off the bench.

2. Trey Burke:

Out of every free agent available, Trey Burke is easily the most likely option to sign with the 76ers. Burke had been competing with Raul Neto for backup point guard minutes, but ultimately got waived after the team acquired Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III. In 29 games this year, Burke averaged 5.9 ppg on 46.5 percent shooting from the field and 42.1 percent shooting from deep. While he won’t be the guy to bring the 76ers over the top, he’s not a bad option, especially with Ben Simmons coming back from injury.

1. Gerald Green:

At age 34, Gerald Green can still be a solid backup for a playoff team. Green played well last season but was released by the Rockets in October after he suffered a broken foot. Now fully recovered, the veteran is likely going to sign somewhere. It’s unclear if he would get minutes on the Sixers. With a ton of forward depth and lack of experience in the Sixers’ system, it may be an uphill climb for Green to see the floor. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.
