Liangelo Ball Signs a 1-Year Deal With Extreme Difficulty

We all know Liangelo Ball just signed a 1-year contract with the Detroit Pistons, but what does this really mean. He did sign with the team, but it isn’t truly a 1-year deal. He received a deal that a lot of undrafted players get nowadays. Let me explain.

What kind of contract did the Pistons give Liangelo?

This 1-year non-guaranteed deal technically makes all the Ball brothers an NBA player. Liangelo Ball"s contract is a bit more complicated. There is a catch to this deal. His deal is an Exhibit 10 contract which is different than a normal NBA contract. It"s a minimum, non-guaranteed contract that comes with a financial incentive if Liangelo Ball signs with the franchise"s G-League team. He will also get a 5,000 to 50,000 dollar bonus after spending 60 days in the G-League affiliate.

Liangelo Ball is one of 20 players right now on the Detroit Pistons roster going into training camp. In order to make one of the 15 roster spots, he will have to outdo several other players. 14 of the players are pretty well locked in, but Liangelo Ball and Anthony Lamb are on Exhibit 10 contracts. These two will battle it out to see who gets a two-way contract, which means they would play in both the G-League and the NBA when needed. The Pistons G-League affiliate has just one two way contract available. Whichever player impresses the most during training camp will sign the two-way deal.

Difference between Liangelo Ball"s contract this season and last season

Last season, Liangelo Ball signed a contract to be on Oklahoma City Thunder"s G-League affiliate, the OKC Blue. That was solely a G-League contract, which means he only signed to play with the Blue. Realistically the Thunder hoped he would perform well enough to sign a two-way deal this season, leading to him playing with the Oklahoma City Thunder. That never happened.

This season, the Detroit Pistons picked him up and are immediately giving him a chance to receive a two-way contract if he outperforms Lamb. If he doesn"t, he will spend his time in the G-League, hoping for a two-way the following season.

What"s the outlook for Liangelo

Ball has two roads he can travel with this Exhibit 10 contract. He can either win out the final two-way contract, or he can play like trash, be cut, and sign a G-League contract.

If Liangelo Ball can hold his own in training camp, which is believed he will, he can play in the preseason. In the preseason, most of the playing time comes from your non-roster starts in essence to get a better look at what you have. If he plays well enough in the preseason, then the Detroit Pistons could accelerate the process and sign him to the NBA roster. Signing him to the 15-man roster as soon as possible is always the best-case scenario. The worst-case scenario is being cut from the team completely.

What will logically happen to Liangelo Ball

Realistically and most logically, the Detroit Pistons will sign Ball to the last two-way contract. He will play in the G-League this season. If he dominates the G-League, we will all see him in the NBA before the season ends. Depending on how well he plays when he gets the call to play in the NBA, the franchise can only decide whether to sign him to a real deal.

After getting a spot on the 15-man roster, then things get harder. He will have to outdo the bench warmers before moving into the rotation. With that, he has a long ladder to climb to get into the regular rotation. All in all, he will get there. It will just take some time.
