Earlier this season, one of the top Orioles prospects, Gunnar Henderson, earned the call to the Norfolk Tides, the team’s Triple A affiliate. At the time, he was dominating Double A pitching, slashing .312/.452/.573 and having more walks than strikeouts, resulting in his promotion. At just 20 years of age, Gunnar Henderson is still a very young prospect, but despite his youth, the top healthy Orioles prospect is thriving with the Norfolk Tides.
Orioles Prospect Gunnar Henderson Dominating for Norfolk Tides
By The Numbers
In a little less than one month with Norfolk, Henderson is showing that no adjustment period was needed as he settled in against Triple A pitching. In 18 games, Henderson is hitting .288/.422/.515 while spending time at both third base and shortstop. His power has continued, clubbing four home runs in his first 18 games while tacking on three doubles.

Meanwhile, on the base paths, he has successfully stolen two more bases in two attempts, giving him 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts across the minors this season. Henderson"s ability to blend speed with power makes him a huge threat in the Norfolk Tides lineup. Add in his ability to play both third base and shortstop, and it is easy to see why Henderson is turning into one of the top Orioles prospects.
The On-Base Merchant
Perhaps Henderson"s greatest ability is his ability to work counts, find his pitch to hit or earn a walk. After finishing Double A with three more walks than strikeouts, Henderson is at it again drawing 15 walks as opposed to 16 strike outs. Despite his young age, his batting eye is well beyond that of his peers in the minors and is a huge reason for his success.

While the Orioles have been playing better as of late, if Henderson keeps performing at this level with the Norfolk Tides, it will not be long before he earns a trip to Baltimore. With a Grayson Rodriguez return hopefully coming by the end of the year, the top of the Orioles system looks great.
Whenever Gunnar Henderson earns the call to Baltimore, the future is looking very bright for this Orioles prospect.
