Oscar De La Hoya not in agreement with Ryan Garcia pull-out

Ryan Garcia made headlines last week when he decided to forego a January interim fight against Mercito Gesta in favor of going straight into April’s proposed clash with rival Gervonta “Tank” Davis.

“I refuse to do another tune up,” Garcia said via social media. “I’m ready for this moment. In my heart I didn’t want to do that to you guys! We are coming straight for Tank! I apologize to any that wanted to see me in Jan but this fight is everything let’s get. You guys seen me from the garage training and now to the biggest stage #April #2rounds

“F**k the tune up. Bring on Tank. SPARKING HIM OUT IN 2

“Been thinking about it during the time they were figuring out this fight and I feel the fans and everyone who supports boxing have seen these tune ups already it’s time that we give the fans what they want. Also he requested the tune up not me so let him handle business. LETS GO”

Garcia’s Promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, however, is not exactly onboard with the idea. The six-division former world champion and Hall of Famer was asked about his fighter’s decision at a recent charity event.

“We did see what Ryan posted and, you know, all we do is have to respect it,” De La Hoya told FightHype.com. All we do is respect his decision and I understand Ryan’s frustration, and I understand the people’s frustrations…Ryan decided to bypass the tune-up and go straight to Tank. I strongly feel it’s a big mistake but, you know, we all have to wish him the very best and stay in shape, stay in the gym, continue training, sparring, stay focused and wait for that big day.”

When asked about Davis following through with his own interim fight (versus Hector Luis Garcia on January 7), The “Golden Boy” also had a firm opinion.

“So, look, Tank is gonna have a tune-up fight,” he said. “His tools are gonna be very sharp for when he faces Ryan Garcia in April…You have to give it up to Tank Davis. He’s confident in his abilities, he has a plan, he knows what he wants to do. And I don’t think he’s calling it a tune-up, I think we’re all calling it a tune-up because it’s not Ryan Garcia. But, yeah, it’s a dangerous fight, it’s a fight that can possibly spoil the big plans we have for Ryan and Tank in April but we’re crossing our fingers.”

If all goes according to plan, Garcia and Davis will meet in a big-money pay-per-view clash in April, after years of rumor, buzz, and online beef between the two. The rough road getting to an agreement between the two fighters and their respective teams has been widely publicized. Obstacles regarding purse split and broadcast rights had to be overcome on the long road to getting the deal in place.

The original plan had both fighters taking interim bouts in January as a prelude to the big one in April. Garcia, obviously, has decided to take his own path to the clash.

This move, given the young fighter’s long history of pulling out of fights due to injury, purse disputes, and mental health issues, has caused some concern over the possibility that Garcia may not come into the Davis fight at 100% or, worse, may not even make the April date.

Time will tell whether Garcia’s decision to pull out of his January bout will have any affect on the big battle with Gervonta Davis. Oscar De La Hoya and everyone else with a business interest in the bout will also be holding their breath.

I remember watching Ryan Garcia on tik tok before he had a belt. I always supported him and continue to support him. People who say he can't fight are idiots, I'm willing to put up my own money for any of those people who say he can't fight to go one on one with Ryan. Ryan Garcia is no joke he is a well oiled machine.
