Europe’s second-tier competition returns to action on April 13 with the quarter-final draw having determined the fate and path of the remaining eight teams in this season’s campaign. Juventus beat SC Freiburg 3-0 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals, Feyenoord cruised past Shaktar Donetsk, Manchester United decapitated Real Betis, Sevilla and Sporting CP progressed past Fenerbahce and Arsenal respectively, Bayer Leverkusen beat Ferencvaros and a couple of games which saw Union Saint-Gillosie and AS Roma as well make the last eight.
It"s not as intriguing and compelling as the UEFA Champions League but there still is some drama to be experienced in the Europa League this season with the likes of Juventus and Manchester United still present at this stage of the competition.
It"s also an entirely different atmosphere with none of the teams which made it to this stage last season present in this year"s quarter-finals.
And so, let"s get down to the four fixtures of the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.
Manchester United vs Sevilla
Just like Bayern Munich versus Manchester City is our heavyweight tie at this stage of the UEFA Champions League, Manchester United going up against Sevilla is our powerhouse fixture for the quarter-finals of the Europa League this season.
The Red Devils have been in top form of recent. Erik Ten Hag"s men are on level terms with Newcastle(both on 53 points) and are looking to return to the Champions League after missing out this season due to last campaign"s terrible performances.
And while United may have clinched the EFL Cup and are looking forward to adding the FA and Europa League to their trophy cabinet in their ill-luck breaking season, they have a very big opponent in form of Jose Luis Mendilibar"s Sevilla.
And Rojiblancos should really mean business when they take on United in this heavyweight tie. Courtesy of poor performances, Sevilla are 13th-placed in La Liga. The UEL happens to be their only chance at retribution this season and a seventh Europa triumph would mean Sevilla make the Champions League again next season.
It would be quite the task for both United and Sevilla. Erik Ten Hag"s men are still active in three competitions till now and it would really be hectic to grind out impressive results across all three of this competitions. And that"s where the Spaniards have an obvious advantage. With nothing to fight for in the league, their have their focus on Thursday night football. This trophy means the entire season to them so they"re not going to let The Red Devils run over them roughshod.
