Israel Adesanya reclaimed the middleweight title at UFC 287 against Alex Pereira via. second-round knockout; leaving the MMA world stunned by what had just transpired.
After a back-and-forth fight, it seemed Pereira had Adesanya reeling following 26 leg kicks throughout just under two rounds of the fight. Pereira landed one that seemed to wobble the former champ late in the second round; smelling blood, Pereira got eager to hunt the finish. With Adesanya up against the cage, Pereira put it on with a combination that consisted of another leg kick, a left jab, a left hook, a right hook to the body, a knee, and his patented left hook, only for Adesanya to stay calm, blocking the majority of them and baited him right into a huge right hook that stunned Pereira and then another one behind it to send “Poatan" crashing to the canvas for the knockout win.
MMA World Reacts
The MMA world was sent into a frenzy after Adesanya finally got one over on his rival, who had previously been 3-0 (2 in kickboxing, 1 in MMA) against “The Last Stylebender."
Close friend and Featherweight champ- Alexander Volkanovski had an epic reaction to the KO.
Another African King made some bold claims following his friends come from behind victory.
Adesanya Had a Cryptic Message for Potential Opponent Following The Win
Following the huge win, Adesanya attended the UFC 287 Post-Fight Press Conference and had some cryptic messages for a certain potential opponent.
“F***, I don"t want to give this [expletive] no clout. I will whoop that… ugh." Adesanya continued after thinking and seemingly frustrated “I want to whoop his a** so bad. I want to do it in South Africa or Nigeria." Adesanya explained further “But he"s got to do work, he"s got to do something. Show me something so I can whoop that a** and I can show you history. I"ll remind you."
Adesanya went on to give some more details on who he was speaking about “You"ve got to choose your words wisely when you speak on people who have come before you, people that paved the way for you." Adesanya then spoke about his hope to face the potential opponent “I don"t want to give him no clout, but if he does work, and I pray to god he keeps winning, I will gladly drag his carcass across South Africa."
There were some key details like pointing out South Africa and wanting to fight there or in Nigeria that seemed to point to #6 ranked middleweight- Dricus du Plessis (19-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC), du Plessis made a few controversial statements last month. “Did those belts ever go to Africa? As far as I know, they came to America and New Zealand. I"m going to take a belt to Africa." du Plessis said regarding the three titles won by Africa"s Three Kings- Adesanya, Ngannou, and Usman.
He continued “I"m the African fighter in the UFC, myself and Cameron (Saaiman), we breathe African air. We wake up in Africa every day. We train in Africa, we"re African born, we"re African raised. We still reside in Africa, we train out of Africa. That"s an African champion and that"s who I"ll be."
What do you think, was Adesanya referencing du Plessis, or perhaps someone else? How do you think a fight between the two would go? Let us know in the comments.
