With only a month and a half left to play in the English Premier League, most eyes have focused on the battle between Arsenal and Manchester City for the top spot of the table. However, while some teams are jockeying for positioning in the different European Leagues, fans of Everton and Leicester City are anxiously hoping to see their teams avoid relegation. With Leicester currently in the bottom 3 and Everton just clear on goal differential, the May 1 match between the two could decide who stays and who goes.
Falling From Grace
It doesn"t seem that long ago that both clubs were battling for spots near the top of the table and playing in the different European competitions. Everton last played in the Europa League during the 2017-18 campaign. Meanwhile Leicester City"s fall from grace has been stunning. The club won the Premier League in 2015-16, the FA Cup in 2020-21 and competed in the Europa League just last season.
Now, both find themselves with their backs against the wall, fighting just to stay in the Premier League. Perhaps unsurprisingly, both teams have sacked their managers with Leicester City moving on from Brendan Rodgers and Everton replacing Frank Lampard.
While a managerial change was likely needed, neither club has made a super noticeable improvement under the new direction.
Remaining Fixtures
With 8 matches to go for both teams, each club faces off against top of table contenders Manchester City and Newcastle United and 13th placed Wolves. Meanwhile, both teams face off against another team battling to avoid relegation, with Leicester matching up with Leeds United and Everton set to battle with Bournemouth.
With most of the rest of the schedule comparable, the game that might end up settling the difference in the table for these two teams is the May 1 matchup between one another. While Everton currently holds a 2 point advantage, Leicester won the earlier matchup 2-0.
Looking Forward
While plenty of other factors might influence the final relegation spot, the possibility that either Leicester City or Everton could find themselves moving down a tier is what makes the sport so fascinating (or stressful).
Both former powerhouses had much loftier expectations this year. As the season winds to a finish, both will hope to survive. If not, a massive exodus of talent might happen as the club will look at a likely re-tooling to fight back into the Premier League.
Either way, a fascinating month is about to being with a bang.
