The Philadelphia Flyers are perhaps one of the most fascinating teams in the National Hockey League. Instead of a full-fledged rebuild, the team hired the controversial John Tortorella this off-season while retooling their roster to perhaps try and battle for a wild card spot. Despite a rough start to the season, the team failed to make any trades at the deadline and after firing their General Manager, don’t appear to have a set direction.
The Tony DeAngelo Situation
The Flyers made some small waves this off-season when they flipped a fourth round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes for Tony DeAngelo, who was than signed to a 2-year, $10 million contract. The move was met by near universal confusion, as most expected the struggling Flyers to hold on to draft capital. Furthermore, the price tag on DeAngelo seemed high.
Over the course of the season, DeAngelo"s play has been heavily scrutinized with most advanced metrics painting a negative picture of DeAngelo"s play. The South Jersey native was met with more criticism after spearing Tampa Bay"s Corey Perry below the belt earned him a two game suspension.
DeAngelo also sparked a bit of controversy in Philadelphia when he seemingly went after fans who were upset with the team"s lack of actions at the trade deadline.
Now, despite his contract and relatively young age, DeAngelo has become a healthy scratch. When asked how a competitive player like DeAngelo has taken the news, Tortorella simply stated that he “hadn"t talked to him" which is a wild statement to make.
Baby Briere
In the relatively recent Flyers history, Danny Briere was one of the most universally loved players. After he finished a really solid playing career, Briere joined the Flyers front office, working his way up to Assistant General Manager. Upon the firing of Chuck Fletcher, the Flyers gave Danny the GM position on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. Sadly for Danny, it"s the action of his son that has helped to spoil the shine on the Briere family name.
In 2019, Carson Briere was a student-athlete at Arizona State University, where he was a member of school"s hockey team. During his freshman season, Carson was removed from the team, and eventually would leave the university, for violating team rules. Eventually, it became known that he was involved in an assault.
This year, Carson found himself still trying to chase his hockey dreams at Mercyhurst University, in Erie Pennsylvania. Video emerged for Carson enjoying a party when he decided to push an unoccupied wheelchair down a flight of stairs, while the wheelchair"s owner was in the restroom.
Eventually, Carson was removed from the school with the University and Danny Briere issuing an apology.
Looking Forward
In a season that seemingly continues to go from bad to worse, the Flyers can"t quite seem to find rock bottom. Meanwhile, despite all the issues, the Flyers have won just enough games to hurt their odds in the lottery. With the incredibly talented Connor Bedard expected to go one overall, the Flyers trip to rock bottom looks to be headed towards another season.
