In sports, everyone seemingly loves the underdog. During March Madness, it was Princeton and Creighton while the Phillies captured the hearts of baseball fans and had everyone Dancing On My Own. Nothing might further show the love of the underdog than Rocky Balboa and the spin-off Adonis Creed. Now, with both franchises on streaming services, it’s fun to look back and reflect on these two fictional champions.
The Rocky Series
The original Rocky, now streaming on Netflix with the rest of the Rocky series, skyrocketed Sylvester Stallone to stardom. Before the movie, Stallone had fallen on hard times and even had to sell his dog before selling the script for Rocky. Understanding that everyone loves an underdog, Stallone painted himself as a boxer as a way to help cover up a partially paralyzed face.
Sure enough, in the original movie, Rocky goes from a complete unknown to going 15 rounds with Apollo Creed. The movie not only made a star out of Stallone, but created a very relatable world where fans felt connected to Rocky"s struggles and triumphs.
Over the course of the movies, a fantastic supporting cast saw Talia Shire further her career after her success in the Godfather, jump started Carl Weathers career, further increased the popularity of Mr. T and Hulk Hogan and turned Dolph Lundgren into the perfect villain.
The Creed Series
After the Rocky series ended, a spin-off series came a few years ago following the life and career of Adonis Creed. Again, the movie perfectly captures the story of an underdog trying to find his place in the world. Currently, the first two Creed movies are streaming on HBO Max while Creed III is still currently in theaters.
Like it"s predecessor series, Creed centers on a character coming from a difficult background before rising to compete to be a champion. Michael B Jordan, along with Tessa Thompson, easily captivate a new generation of underdog supporters.
What makes the third installment of the Creed franchise a little different is that Sylvester Stallone is absent from the first movie of the franchise.
With both movies telling the stories of underdogs down on their luck, it"s easy to see why so many have flocked to these movies. From likable characters trying their best as they transform into gladiators, the Rocky and Creed movies have won the hearts of fans both young and old. Always ready to root for the next underdog.
