Defending US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick had a scorching weekend of 63-68 to win his second PGA Tour event in a playoff over the defending RBC champion Jordan Spieth. While the drama was focused on the absence of Rory Mcllroy, the Sunday drama was high as Fitz and Spieth (and Patrick Cantlay) dueled all Sunday into the 75th hole to determine a winner.
Fitzpatrick stuffed a 9 iron to a foot on the 75th hole to become the first Englishman since Nick Faldo in 1984 to win in Hilton Head. This was also a "designated event" on the PGA Tour this season, so the purse and competition were raised for the tournament this season.
Not A Surprise Winner
Even though Fitzpatrick has now won twice in the states, he is no stranger to winning. He won the US Amateur in 2013, which is the most prestigious amateur golf tournament on the planet. He also has 7 DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) titles including 2 Euro Tour Championship titles.
He has one major under his belt, winning the US Open last year at The Country Club, on the same course he won the 2013 US Amateur. He left Northwestern University in his freshman year to focus on golf and never looked back as he turned professional shortly after.
Meaningful Win At Harbour Town
Outside of Augusta National, Fitzpatrick claims that Harbour Town Golf Links is his course to play at. This goes back to his childhood where he would spend summers in Hilton Head playing golf at Harbour Town.
He also enjoyed the course as a spectator watching the tournament unfold in his youth. Fitzpatrick dawned a "lighthouse headcover" on his driver this week to pay homage to the course he loves so much.
Is This The Start Of A True Breakout?
It appeared that Fitzpatrick was going to really start a string of victories after his US Open win last year. While it has not happened, it appears his momentum is building this time around. He is a tireless worker and tracks all his golf shots.
He keeps detailed notes of every single shot he has hit since he was a junior golfer. And he still uses those notes today when needed, especially if he visits the course again for a professional tournament.
This data driven approach has given him an accountability towards his progress and goals. This attention to detail will continue to keep Fitzpatrick on the radar for all tournaments and majors for the foreseeable future.
