Kylian Mbappe has two weeks to decide as Leonardo weighs in on PSG exit

Kylian Mbappé has been warned he has two weeks to decide his future. The France international made it clear he will not take up the option of a contract extension, setting him up to be a free agent in June 2024.

However, PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi said he will not be allowed to leave the team “for nothing” next summer. “We want him to stay but he can’t leave for free,” Al-Khelaifi said at the unveiling of new manager Luis Enrique.

“There was a verbal agreement and he had discussed it in an interview. And I was really shocked to learn that he had decided to leave for free. It’s very disappointing because Mbappé is a fantastic boy, a real gentleman and to leave for free, weakening the biggest club in France, it’s not him.

“When I heard the news, I was shocked and disappointed.”

Mbappé is angling for a long-awaited move to Real Madrid, but both he and the Spanish side would naturally prefer him to walk out of PSG on a free.

“It’s for him to decide for himself next week, or at most in the next two weeks,” Al-Khelaifi continued. “And if he does not want to sign a new contract, the door is open.”

Recently, former Paris Saint-Germain director Leonardo has urged the club to get rid of Kylian Mbappé this summer.

“For the good of PSG, I think the time has come for Mbappé to leave, whatever happens,” Leonardo told L’Equipe. “Paris-Saint-Germain existed before Kylian Mbappe and will exist after him.”

Mbappé has been at PSG since 2017, with 212 goals in 260 games. He has won 12 team trophies with the team, including five Ligue 1 titles.
